In 1879, Fritsch Brothers opened the firstmarine gift shop in Pawtucket and it was quickly becoming one of the most popular businesses in town. The store continued to be run by Grosse & Fritsch until 1981 when they sold their business to John Elverson. When Elverson died in 1984, his son, John E., took over the business. John E.'s father had started a marine supply store called The Fish House on Meeting Street back in 1868 and it soon became an important part of Pawtucket's economy. After John E.'s father's death, The Fish House passed away too and its inventory was donated to the new marine gift shop founded by Fritsch Brothers. This collection of fishing supplies included items such as nets and tackle, boat parts and accessories, boat engines and accessories, salt water goblets and other seafood products, as well as dolls! Over time, John E.'s fathers legacy at The Fish House has been carried on into today's store. His sons continue to sell items from their fathers' collection while also carrying their own unique line of merchandise which includes both traditional human-made gifts as well as custom-made gifts for special occasions such as weddings or Christmas parties. Pawtucket was founded in 1638 by Anglicans from England as the small settlement of Pawtucket Plantation. The name came from an old Indian word meaning "a place where ducks are hatched." Pawtucket became an important port and manufacturing center in colonial America during the 17th century. In 1781, Pawtucket was chartered as a borough by John Adams; it became a city in 1851 when it annexed part of Providence. In 1919, Pawtucket seceded from Massachusetts to form its own government and become one of the five cities that made up the new Commonwealth of Rhode Island. The history of Pawtucket can be traced back to 1638 when Anglican missionaries arrived in what is now Providence County and began to plant Churches there. One account says that they named their new community after an old Indian word meaning "a place where ducks are hatched," probably because this area had many duck ponds. Other sources claim that the name originated with John Smith, who discovered land on which the town would be built and which he named "Pawtucket", after his patron saint Peter.[1] The original settlers were all Englishmen who had come overland through New England on their way to find new lands for English colonists. They built homes along Narraganset Bay and developed businesses such as carpentry, boatbuilding, textile production, salt production, cattle ranching and fishing..[2] Meanwhile, William Dawes worked diligently on creating what is now downtown Pawtucket while building some of what would eventually become Brown University (later Yale). These early pioneers were followed by others who invested in local industries until today's economy is based largely on maritime commerce and tourism.[3] In 1781-82 Thomas Musgrove constructed a road around Narraganset Bay so traffic could move freely between Providence and Warwick without having to go through Portsmouth or North Kingstown on the mainland; this road is still present today known as Musgrove Street. Pawtucket was first settled by English colonists in 1636. In 1786, the town voted to change its name to Providence after King George III of Great Britain made it an independent province. The name Providence applied only to the city of Provincetown, and not to Pawtucket.
