In 1636, Pawtucket was the site of a small Dutch colony that grew rich from its coffee exports. The Dutch were the first to roast their coffee in an oven and sell it fresh to local merchants. By 1700, Pawtucket had become a major port for goods flowing from Rhode Island to British North America. The Dutch colony's wealth allowed them to build some of the most impressive architecture in Rhode Island, such as the Govan House and Fort Hills. The town also became home to many business leaders and political figures who helped shape Rhode Island's early years as an American republic. In 1792, after England replaced Dutch rule in America, Pawtucket finally fell under British control and ceased being a separate city. However, since coffee was still a big part of Pawtucket's economy, the town continued exporting beans until 1885 when it switched over to roasting its own beans. After being stranded offshore for several weeks local natives built themselves huts using branches from surrounding trees along with some salvaged materials from HMS Enterprise which had drifted ashore They also collected seaweed which would go into dishes served onboard HMS Enterprise From here locals would take sea voyages beginning with Captain James Cooks second voyage circumnavigating Australia via New Zealand around May 1769 he called Atoll Ia Nui or Pemaquid Isles because there were no islands within sight beyond those mentioned by Cook his expedition discovered many previously unknown islands including Beechey Atoll & McDonald Atoll These discoveries made possible Western Hemisphere Extension Company founded by Governor Brown under US federal charter In 1800 French explorer Nicolas Durand landed here attempting passage around Cape Horn He didn't find anything permanent so returned home But his party spent 3 winter nights ashore converting saltpeter manufactory into batteries used on warships leaving France As word spread throughout Europe about American discovery many other ships descended upon Marblehead Bay seeking plunder mounted search parties failed To find anything worth taking aboard returned home safely aboard HMS Discovery return trip completed just prior TO Boston Tea Party On April 15 1801 all crewmenabove deck perished when Discovery ran aground at Kearsarge Reef near Barnstableport North carolina enrouteto Havana Cuba With only 44 embarked vs 5 fleets OF NAVY vessels ON THE WALLICONGUARD plus 4 privateers none thought worth boarding ship & DESTROYED ALL 12 ONDERSIDE NOTE: This event marked final departure of white men from Colonial America signifying end of British colonial rule Over 200 years later& still no definitive answer regards cause(s)of loss Of Sixty four sailors + 4privateers = 66% Loss rate Does not include lostCities Of Providence Shelly Beach Somersworth Cranston Liverpool
