The Rhode Island Army National Guard is one of the oldest and most veteran-led military organizations in the United States. The guard was organized on Christmas Day, 1775, during the English Revolution as a volunteer force to help protect Newport, R.I. After World War I, it became an all-volunteer arm of the Department of Defense and was authorized to wear a soldier's helmet in 1951. The Guard remains one of only two U.S. military forces that maintain a full complement of cavalry troops (the other being the New Mexico National Guard). In 1855, Pawtucket merchants organized a company to provide artillery for their defense against Indian attacks. In 1861, Pawtucket joined Massachusetts in seceding from the Union; however, when Rhode Island became Confederate territory under General Winfield Scott, its citizens supported him and opposed secessionism. On July 4th following the Battle of Bunker Hill (a fight fought between British regulars and American rebels), Rhode Islanders voted 2-to-1 to join Confederate Virginia as part of that state's planned "Fourteenth Amendment." This amendment granted voting rights to African Americans throughout Southern states who did not have them previously; Pawtucket residents continued to support the Confederacy until 1865 when they fell victim to Union forces at Fort Sumter and were forced into slavery within South Carolina pursuant to that state's ratified Constitution. After Reconstruction ended in 1877 with federal reconstruction policy favoring white rule over black equality, many Pawtucket whites decided they no longer wanted any part of what had once been called "the negroes' country." As a result, around 1900 there began an exodus by white Providenceians from much of rural Providence into central Pawtucket where they could find more affordable housing and opportunities for employment in industry or services such as restaurant work or street sweeping etc.; this migration led eventually to what is now known as "Pawtucket Negro" culture in downtown Providence which retained some elements of African American heritage but generally spoke English fluently while using - often stereotypical - terms specific to their background such as Dexter Avenue instead of "Highway 61". 2nd Lt.-Colonel John Hatton ordered his 5th Infantry Regiment Armory Company (later redesignated 1st Infantry Regiment) on December 10th 1915 from Middletown Depot #4 onto Warwick Street just east off Court Street for use by RIAC units quartered there during World War I along with Springfield ArmoryOSB located on Church Street across from URIASD Headquarters building before USAAF airbase opened at nearby North China Field on February 15th 1918 after years spent at Milford Airfield east side nearProvidence Railroad station 3/5ths mile south along Route 401 Ammunition & Carried Ammunition Inventory Sheet dated 11/15/1920 shows inventory changes for RIAC ammunition depot located at WarwickStreet & CourtStREET which served both USAAF aircraft stationed at NorthChinaField & RIAC HQ during WWI

Pawtucket is an incorporated town in Rhode Island on the south shore of Narragansett Bay. The population was 36,362 at the 2010 census, making it the second-most populous municipality in Rhode Island after Providence. Pawtucket is adjacent to several other towns and villages within its borders: Allston, North Kingstown, Cranston, Warwick, and South Kingstown. The first people to live here were the Lenape Indians who occupied what is now Pawtucket from about 1634 to 1639. The English colonists arrived in 1636 and founded Jamestown on Warwick River as part of their efforts to expand British control over New England. They named their new town after Sir Walter Raleigh's ship HMS Raven which had been lost off Africa while exploring that continent for Spain. The name "Pawtucket" means "place where there are many trees." In 1771, Pawtucket Parish was created out of parts of North Kingston and Cranston parishes with a population of 9 residents. By 1800, Pawtucket had a population of 22 residents and a parish seat at Watertown (now known as Wantagh). In 1814, when Rhode Island became a state independent from Massachusetts, Pawtucket became one of the original nine townships under colonial rule. In 1837 – just before Rhode Island achieved statehood – Pawtucket had a population of only 2 individuals; by 1861 it had reached 10 residents and its parish seat at Watertown (nowWantagh). During this time there were also significant changes taking place within the community: during 1854–1855 John Leland built the first commercial building in Pawtucket; around 1860 two churches were built; between 1865 and 1870 iron rails were laid along Main Street; during this time also some homes were built on Johnston Avenue near present day Brown University's campus. During Reconstruction period (1868-1912), pawtsuckers played an important role in reconstruction efforts following the American Civil War including working on projects such as rebuilding hospitals and construction materials for General US Grant's army during his campaigns into Georgia and Tennessee.
