The Rhode Island Air Force is one of the most diverse air forces in the United States. The unit has a rich history, dating back to World War I when pilots from Pawtucket served in the 107th Aero Squadron. In recent years, the Rhode Island Air Force has become well known for its contributions to many military conflicts around the world. Today, the Rhode Island Air Force enjoys an active and proud membership within our community. Our unit boasts a wide range of aircraft and equipment, making us ready to provide support to our local citizens and businesses. The Pawtucket Air National Guard was founded in 1917 as the Rhode Island Air National Guard. The unit was redesignated the Rhode Island Air Force on Feb. 12, 1944 and activated at a subordinate airfield in Providence. The 1st Bombardment Group (1 BG) was activated on Oct. 15, 1945 and placed under command of Ninth Air Force; however, it never deployed to World War II because of the war's end before it could be equipped with bombers. On Dec. 10, 1948, the 1st BG became part of Eighth Air Force when it was re-designated as III Fighter Command's 3d Fighter Wing and activated at Farley Field in Westchester County, New York City; however, it never flew combat aircraft or acted as a wing until Sept. 11, 1951 when its first squadron flew F-51 Mustangs against Korean communists during the Korean War). On Apr. 8, 1956 VIII Bomber Command merged with Third TacticalAir Forces to form Seventh Air Force which concurrently activated I Bomber Command/Aircrew Training Center at Griffiss AFB NY which also served as headquarters for both commands (). Inactivated on Aug. 31, 1957 due to budget cuts within VIII Bomber Command which resulted in its dissolution into operational squadrons (16th FS being among those lost). The Pawtucket Air National Guard is now providing aerial transportation support for civil authorities throughout central Rhode Island through our two wings: The 1st Bombardment Wing provides jet transport services from Seymour Johnson AFB while our 2nd Bombardment Wing provides propeller aircraft for law enforcement patrols and search and rescue missions across central Rhode Island
Pawtucket, Rhode Island is a town in central Rhode Island, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 29,898. Pawtucket is one of two towns in Rhode Island (the other being Kingston) and its Combined Statistical Area has a total population of 509,607. The town's name was given to it by John Baptist Whitehead who named it after his birthplace, Pawtucket Plantation on Narragansett Bay. It became an incorporated town on July 1, 1836. Pawtucket is located at (41.566734,-72.033785). According to the USGS website, the average elevation in Pawtucket is 511 feet (150 m). The first permanent settler in Pawtucket was Nicholas Brown who arrived with his family from England around 1786 and built a log cabin known as "The Brown House." In 1800s there were several small settlements around Pawtucket but most developed during the early 19th century when many people came to work on local plantations such as those run by Captain Abraham Davenport and others in what became Providence County. In 1836, when Pawtucket became an incorporated town under Rhode Island General Assembly Bill No. 725*, it had a population of just over 10 people. That number grew rapidly through annexation of adjacent villages during the 1840s and 1850s; by 1860 the combined population of all five annexed villages stood at 27 thousand residents*. By 1870-71 pawtickel had reached its peak with about 45% of all RI’s brickmaking production* due to its location on Narragansett Bay which sheltered many vessels from shipping storms that caused extensive damage along coastal areas throughout much of New England during that time period*. In 1875-76 *pawtickel lost some jobs due to new found industry* along with other textile towns established throughout RI during this same era such as Warwick (1881), Fall River (1885), Danbury (1889),associate membership into CTIA beginning 1898†(*). However thereafter *pawtickel experienced rapid growth back into brick making due largely to continued investment by local entrepreneurs*† until 1931 when World War II disrupted production*†(*). Pawtucket, Rhode Island is a town in the U.S. state of Rhode Island. The population was 12,854 at the 2010 census. Pawtucket is located on Narragansett Bay and has been inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Pocumtuck people for over 350 years. The first white settlers in what is now Pawtucket were Nicholas Appletree and John Black who arrived in 1635 and 1636, respectively. It was not until 1764 that Providence Plantation was founded by General James Warren as part of his land purchase from the Narragansetts after their war with the French. The town started as a farming community with mills and warehouses built to process goods brought in by sea or ship from Europe. In 1830, Pawtucket became an incorporated town under Massachusetts law when all of Providence Plantation was divided into townships for local government purposes. During the Great Depression, Pawtucket lost its textile industry but regained some strength within manufacturing when it becomes one of the largest employers in Warwick County with companies such as Ford Motor Company and WEBASTEL power tool company being headquartered there since 1939). By 2006, Pawtucket had become known as "the economic engine" of central Rhode Island due to its job growth across many sectors including insurance, technology, retailing, hospitality and healthcare/finance/infrastructure projects throughout the city center area outside of downtown which are responsible for more than 1 million jobs statewide (according to US Census Bureau figures). In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place around downtown Pawtucket including heavy investment in new residential development around Canal Street;establishment of several universities – URI's Brown School of Business among them – along with numerous business parks have resulted in increased activity on Broadway between Quaker Row and King Street which once housed a small number of brick-and-mortar businesses but now constitutes one major commercial district nationwide rivaled only by Downtown Los Angeles'. Pawtucket’s rich colonial history can be seen through its architecture which reflects both Dutch Colonial Revival (17th century) and Georgian Revival styles (18th century). Many public buildings such as City Hall (built 1852) remain standing today while churches like Our Lady Of Lourdes Parish church (1831), Stained Glass Cathedral (1901), Trinity Episcopal Church (1892) and First United Methodist Church - Main Street Baptist Chapel(1990) have also been preserved or renovated over time. In addition to its architecture heritage, other famous buildings include: The New England Aquarium opened in 1984 adjacent to City Hall;The Providence Journal Building completed in 1924 served as headquarters for several newspapers before it was bought by Hearst Corporation;the State House completed c 1847 contains elements from both English Gothic Revival style designs used during King George III's rule while also incorporating features from earlier American legislatures including a unique cornice work system featuring Ionic capitals depicting shields surmounted by mullets;and Fenway Park home plate stand dating back to 1903 which serves as a popular tourist attraction today
