According to the 2010 US Census Bureau estimate, Newport's population totaled 25,041 people; 10% more than it had been ten years earlier but still less than Providence or Boston proper. The growth rate over this period has been particularly high among Hispanics – who made up 12% of all residents but account for 31% of total job earnings – although whites have continued to outnumber Hispanics by about 2-1%. nevertheless poverty rates have begunto decline since 2004rendering Newport one of America's wealthiest jurisdictions

However, during World War II Newport emerged as an air-raid lookout station due to its position on Narragansett Bay.
