East Providence, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 14,442 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Providence-Woonsocket-Fall River Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "East Providence" derives from English settlers who arrived in 1636 and called the area "Providence." The first permanent settler in East Providence was Nicholas Negreanu who erected a log cabin on what is now Meeting Street in 1647. In 1793, the town was organized as part of the new Colony of Rhode Island and West Indies. At its peak in 1830, it had a population of 21,812 people. In 1837–38, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), East Providence became known as Battle Ground No. 10 due to its role as an early front line against Confederate forces (the battle took place near present day Warwick). After the war ended on April 9th 1865, most of East Providence's residents chose to return home rather than fight again abroad or stay in New England after Reconstruction began. However some stayed until 1892 when they all moved to Westerville which then became their final resting place before Kingston fullfilled their replacement function with East Providence becoming their official municipal center The current Main Street Bridge across Narragansett Bay opened November 1st 2017 by Governor Gina Raimondo
