East Providence is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island. The population was 11,737 at the 2010 census. It lies on the South Kingstown-Warwick River corridor and is part of the Providence Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years. English settlers arrived in 1636, and soon began to build churches, schools, and other infrastructure. In 1814, East Providence became part of the newly formed United States of America as a result of the Compromise of 1814. The first public school in East Providence was opened in 1792 by Reverend Samuel Henshaw. A private school was founded in 1800 by Captain John Browning for his family. In 1827, the West Indian colored community of Hope erected a large wooden church on what is now North Main Street in East Providence. This was one of the earliest black churches in Rhode Island. During World War II, many jobs were created within Defense Industry due to wartime shortages of labor elsewhere in the country. For example, an industrial plant that manufactured radios and radar parts was located just outside of East Providence along Warwick Boulevard until it closed after the war because too much competition arose from other plants across RI that had not been affected by wartime production restrictions
East Providence was one of the original towns in Rhode Island. It was located on the east side of Narragansett Bay and was founded by Captain John Smith in 1626. East Providence grew rapidly and by 1655 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1781, during the American Revolution, East Providence sided with the Patriots against the British Empire. The town remained staunchly loyal to the United States until its destruction in 1814 during a battle between Patriot militia and British regulars.
