East Providence is a town in Rhode Island on the southern tip of the island. It was first settled in 1637 by English colonists and became an independent community after the Massachusetts Bay Colony dissolved in 1776. The population of East Providence grew rapidly during the 1800s, reaching 100,000 by 1900. However, economic stagnation and recent flooding have caused significant decline in population since then. Today, East Providence has a population of about 25,000. The town was named for its location on the easternmost point of Rhode Island as well as for Sir Edmund Sanders (1609-1675), who purchased it from the Native American tribe Pawtucket Indians in 1637. In 1639, Sanders founded Newport Plantation on what is now Narragansett Bay; this plantation served as a model for later British colonies. In 1641, he sold his property to John Winthrop (1587-1649), who built Hopkinton House there on land that had been donated by Simon Bradstreet (1503-1598). Winthrop also acquired two other estates in East Providence - Hope and Sutton - which he used to create what is now downtown Rhode Island. Winthrop's original colony was small and only lasted three years; however, it played an important role in helping lay the foundation for modern day Rhode Island. After his death, his son Roger Williams (c1600-1686) began a long struggle for independence from Great Britain which eventually led to the establishment of Rhode Island as an independent state in 1912. This history makes East Providence one of its most heritage rich communities on RIiceland!
