In 1814, Providence's first dark roast coffee experiment took place at the New England Coffee House. At this location, master roaster and businessman Ebenezer Sprague bought three sacks of fresh roasted coffee and analyzed it for flavor. He found that the beans had a strong flavor profile with notes of chocolate, molasses, and nuts. over time, Sprague's Experimental Roastery grew into one of the largest and most successful roasting companies in America. During its years in business, the Experimental Roastery developed a reputation for quality and innovation. One of their main products was their popular "dark roast" range which featured coffees that were medium-dark in color with a rich taste and deep roasted flavors. This range helped create an iconic legacy for Providence's own brand of coffee that continues to be enjoyed by today's drinkers throughout America. East Providence was founded in 1663 by the Warwick Company of Rhode Islanders. The town was named for Providence, R.I., which is about 20 miles to the east. The original settlers were Iacopo Leonard and his family. The first store in East Providence was built on what is now Market Street. The town grew rapidly, and by 1797 there were more than 100 businesses in the community. In 1802, a school was established in East Providence, and within 10 years it had become one of the most important educational institutions in Rhode Island. During the American Revolution, many of the residents of East Providence sided with Great Britain because they believed that their rights as Rhode Islanders were being violated by the revolution. After the war ended, many of these residents returned to their homes and businesses but some continued to live in East Providence until after its incorporation into Narragansett County in 1868. Today, East Providence remains an important part of Rhode Island history and culture – it is home to several museums, including the RI School Museum and Maritime Museum, as well as numerous stores and restaurants that offer local cuisine.
