The United States Air Force has a rich history in Rhode Island. The first American forces were stationed in the state during World War I, and the USAF was created following the war. The state's air force is one of America's most persistent and powerful military organizations, and it has been involved in a number of wars since 1959. Today, the USAF operates more than 560 bases across the country, making it one of America's largest land armies. It employs more than 134,000 people, and its mission is to protect national security and support military operations around the world. In addition to its combat role, the USAF also oversees civilian air traffic control systems and provides humanitarian assistance. The USAF traces its origins to World War I. After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 –triggering America's entry into World War II – Congress authorized creation of an all-volunteer aerial armada called "the National Defense Service Aviation Corps." This organization was activated on February 17th 1942 under General Douglas MacArthur as part of Roosevelt's New Deal program to expand government involvement in warfare. The NSAC soon became known as the USAAF after President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which ordered all American citizens to register with their local airforce stations by May 1st 1942. The original wing structure for both ground-based fighter airplanes (F4F) and bombers (B-29s) consisted only of two squadrons: XXIV Bomber Command at Langley AFB in Virginia Beach and IX Bomber Command at Kelly AFB near San Antonio TX). However, these squadrons were not operationally subordinate to each other; instead they operated autonomously from headquarters units located at Langley AFB or Kelly AFB respectively. As war continued to escalate tensions between Nazi Germany and Great Britain over sea lanes vital for supply lines for American troops fighting abroad – including through Providence – Roosevelt unilaterally decreed that all bomber wings must be combined into a single unit under his command effective July 16th 1944 which became known as "the Air Groups". The United States Air Force acquired the Waco-class bomber from Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1956, and redesignated it the A-7 Corsair. The A-7 became operational with the 6th Fighter Wing at Rome, Italy in 1957 and saw action in several episodes of the Cold War, including an engagement against the Soviet Union's strategic bombers over Cuba in 1962. In 1969, when NATO transferred its forces to Europe, the 6FW moved to RAF Fairford England and continued using the A-7 as their primary air superiority fighter aircraft until retiring it in 1978. In 1984, East Providence community members donated a Cessna 182 helicopter to be used by 4th Flight Squadron at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. The helicopter served as a rotary wing replacement for both the CH-47E Chinook helicopters flown by 1st Wing and then 2nd Wing during Operation Desert Storm. It was also used for humanitarian relief operations following Hurricane Charley in 1992. After being retired from active duty service within 3 years it was donated to Providence Community College where it currently resides as part of their Aircraft Operations Museum
East Providence, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island. The population was 17,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Providence metropolitan area. The largest employer in East Providence is Brown University which has over 41,000 students and employees. Other major employers include the Providence Regional Medical Center and Harvard University's School of Public Health. The first humans to live in what is now East Providence were mustangs who migrated from Canada around 1000 BC. Indian tribes had hunted and killed them for their meat since before that time. In 1636, King Philip II of England granted a tract of land to John Winthrop for his "providential" selection as governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. For years after that event, there was much discussion about where to put the new colony - some believed it should be in New England because of its rich resources and history; others desired it near Boston because they thought it would allow easier access by shipping to English goods brought overland from Europe. In 1638, John Winthrop formed a committee with other colonists to explore possible sites for the new colony - one recommendation came back "Providence", so Winthrop named his new settlement after his home town in Norfolk County, England (now Portsmouth). On July 10th of that year, he obtained a charter from King Charles II giving him exclusive rights to establish an English Colony onmas'hill in Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company lot east side Broadwalk between Quay St & Thames St., then bounded northerly by Long Wharf on Shoreline Road & westerly by river mouth (today's Warwick Avenue), thence easterly alongshore line thereof upriver until point opposite mouth of tidal River Warwick River (at present day Pawtucket Street) – this being called Plymouth Plantation". Winthrop's original settlers were some 50 men under Captains Abraham Winslow and Edward Winslow; these men founded what became known as Congregationalist Church on Mayflower Landing on December 15th 1640/41 due westward from Cape Cod Sound across Narragansett Bay to site now occupied by South Kingstown Pierrepont Bridge across Narragansett Bay – first recorded reference to "Providence" dated October 13th 1639! coreligionists built courthouse (1645), schoolhouse (1646), meetinghouses (1649-50), parsonage house (1711) and gristmill(1712). After Plymouth drifted away from Britain during World War II (!), most returned home only during those tenuous few years following hostilities ended; however 1 man among them developed strong connections with Connecticut On January 3rd 1724 Robert Treat Paine purchased 100 acres within present day tithes square following survey taken January 4th 1724; 150 acres more was purchased two years later when title extended south along Main Street eastward past today's Waterford House public library all the way out into Wellesley Pond! This marked Increase in Paine acreage holdings totalizing 2200 acres prior thereto!!! At same time 3000 + acreages adjoining heretofore unrecorded lots sold at said sale including 1800+ acreages conveyed freehold by Isaac Brockman Jr.–one example illustrating increasing trend toward residential suburbanization currently underway throughout RI!!! One implication surrounding increase ownership prominence within society may have been increased pressure exerted upon earlier occupants not too develop contiguous or integrated farmlands previous allegiances notwithstanding! Today many people take pride knowing their ancestors did not just drift away but bought property specifically for development…

East Providence is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 10,036 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest municipality in Rhode Island and the second-most populous town in New England after Bridgeport. East Providence is part of the Providence metropolitan area. The first European to arrive in what is now East Providence was Giovanni da Verrazzano on October 14, 1524, when he sighted land that would become known as Narragansett Bay. He named it "Providence" after his patron saint and also landed here some French colonists from Canada who had been sent by Francis I of France to explore new territory in North America. In 1636, Captain John Smith discovered a navigable channel between Narragansetts Bay and Long Island Sound which led to increased trade with Europe and opened up new shipping lanes for commerce along the American coast. By 1639, there were over 100 English families living in East Providence; however relations between them and local Native Americans became strained as they developed their own cultures separate from those of their neighbors on the mainland. On July 24, 1776, during the Revolutionary War, three hundred men under command of Captain Nicholas Henshall march into East Providence against Colonel Arthur Stroud's battery at White Sands Ferry Landing near present day Hopkinton Avenue where they successfully destroyed both cannons and majority of stores before being recaptured by Colonel Arthur Stroud's forces less than two weeks later on August 3rd while marching northward downriver towards Portsmouth Naval Shipyard following fortifications built by Admiral Thomas Graves at Pawtucket Pointon September 26th Blockade Runner captained by Samuel Eliot Morison February 28th arrived off Cape Cod behind HMS Hermione stopped only 50 yards off shore Juneau Harbor Juneau River Blockading Squadron consisting of USS Constitution ( Flagship ) Commodore John Barron USS Dolphin ( flagship ), HMS Fidelity , HMS Repulse (flagship), HMAS Perth . Onboard were Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander James Drake USN His Majesty's Ships Constitution ( Flagship ), Dolphin ( flagship ), HMS Fidelity , HMS Repulse . This event marks beginning of end of British colonial rule over America In 1793 General William Howe ordered Major General Edmund Braddock to move his army up river from Halifax via Dartmouth towards Boston through Charlestown Delaware River crossing without meeting any resistance but he found no opportunity for an attack due to winter weather conditions so instead Howe marched his army around Cape George Nino back downriver past Newport News Virginia Harbour before turning east across Sandy Hook Pass nearpresent day Mohegan Wells Connecticut December 8th reached New York January 17th 1803 ended British Colonial rule over America
