Cranston is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 22,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Providence- Warwick Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what would become Cranston arrived on Mayflower in 1636 and named the town after themselves, Cranston meaning "the craggy headland." The first school was built here in 1641. The area around present day Cranston was settled by people from Connecticut who started to come to this area during the 17th century for land and mineral rights. In 1750, it became one of the original towns in Rhode Island. Many of these early settlers were veterans of the American Revolution and their homes were used as military camps during that time period. In 1812, President James Kapp assigned George Washington's cousin Arthur Stoughton to settle some land hereabouts because he thought it might be an ideal place for a cotton plantation given its good soil and easy access to water resources. However, when Stoughton discovered that there was no cotton available hereabouts he abandoned his project and returned home before long. This experience helped inspire him to found the First Congregational Church (now Christmastime Day United Methodist Church) which was built on what is now Water Street in 1824 just east ofpresent day Middle School Square. During World War II many cranSTONians volunteered their time or services to help with munitions production or service overseas; examples include truck drivers for General Motors Co., nurses at Bethlem Hospital, mechanics at Nellis Air Force Base etc., as well as more common tasks such as loaders for factories or working odd hours at various businesses throughout the war years like local restaurateurs who managed night shifts while their customers ate breakfast downtown; many residents also worked odd jobs during wartime shortages like farmhands needed on farms near airfields due to lack of other work options open up at those times! Cranston is one of the most historic towns in all of Rhode Island and has played an important role in its history for centuries. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cranston were traders from England. In 1636, Englishman John Smith discovered a salt lick on the mainland and named it "Cranston". The first permanent European settlement in what is now Cranston was made by Rev. John Eliot on December 12th, 1637 as part of his efforts to found New Providence Plantation. The town's name derived from nearby Crusoe's Islet which had been used by the native Narragansetts for their fishing fleets during the early 1400s. The salt works that developed around Cracraft helped make cranberry sauce one of America's most popular dishes and also supplied Cromwell's army with munitions during the English Civil War (1642-1651). In 1784, Governor Arthur Tryon ordered that all Native American children be removed fromRhode Island due to fears they would be Used as Soldiers against their own people during the Revolutionary War (1775-83). This order led to much resentment throughout Rhode Island towards Great Britain and caused many homes and businesses in Cranston to remain abandoned for years after Tryon's order was rescinded. However, over time many of these properties were rebuilt or reincarnated as successful businesses such as Greeting Cards & Gifts store; First Baptist Church; Warwick School District; Preservation Trust for Historic Preservation - Crane Street Presbyterian Church; Cranston Arts District Inc.; Pizzeria Uno - open since 1959 ; Providence Journal building - built 1810) among others. In 1978, when Cranston became an independent city it elected its first Mayor - Alvin Brown (D). Brown served two terms before he died in office on July 10th, 2003 after being termlimited out by law. He was succeeded by Lincoln Chafee who served twice more before becoming mayor again in 2011 after being elected without running for office twice

In 1814, President James K. Polk granted an act of Congress authorizing the erection of a national cemetery in Cranston. The first interment occurred in 1846.
