Cranston is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 21,441 at the 2010 census. Cranston is the smallest of the five towns in Providence metropolitan area. It is also one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in America. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cranston were fishermen from Narragansett Bay and Block Island who landed on October 13, 1606 on the east coast of present-day Cranston Peninsula during their exploration of new land south of Providence. They named their new island after Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian explorer and navigator who had explored these waters two years earlier on his mapping expedition led by Giovanni da Verrazzano himself. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Cranston was founded by Roger Williams in 1637 as part of hisProvidence Plantation which he purchased from John Winthrop Sr.. The name "Cranston" first appeared on a map dated March 2, 1701, when it was included within the boundaries of Providence Township and Watertown Village. In 1836, many residents voted to secede from Rhode Island because they felt that its government was not representative of them culturally or politically. The National Guard has a long and varied history, dating back to the Revolutionary War. The Militia Act of 1792 created the National Guard as an organization that could be raised in times of insurrection or emergency. The act also mandated that all militia members be discharged within six months, regardless of cause. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln authorized the creation of state guard forces within each state. These forces were known as “the Military Forces of the United States” and were not subordinate to the federal government. In 1903, Congress passed a law which established the Guard as a separate military force with its own budget and authority. This allowed for Guardsmen to serve in any country throughout World War II; however, their combat role was limited to guarding U.S. diplomatic missions abroad. Since then, there have been several expansions and modifications to the National Guard system including: -In 1991, Congress authorized establishment of an entity known as “the Army Reserve” which provides training and Ready Reserve status for civilians who are not members of the military (e.g., parents who want their children to become soldiers). -On July 1st, 2002, duty hours for guardsmen became 16 hours per day instead of 8 hours per day while on duty (a modification made due to increased travel requirements related to 9/11). -On September 5th, 2006, Guardsmen were granted protection from being drafted into either service during wartime by passage of the Protect Our Service Act (POSA). -In 2007–2008 there was significant reform activity with changes such as abolishing night shifts for guardsmen while on duty and increasing deployment opportunities in response to911 terrorist attacks across America

Cranston is a town in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 16,917 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Rhode Island and the tenth-largest municipality in New England after Hartford, Connecticut, Boston, Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island. The first settlement in what is now Cranston was made on March 15, 1768 by John Brown who sold his land to Samuel Adams for $4 per acre. The first public school in Cranston was founded on July 6th of that year. On December 1st of that year a group of men from Pawtucket set out from Pawtucket with 300 pounds (136 kg) of goods to explore the new territory they had purchased. They called themselves the " Pioneers". The town site chosen for Cranston was on an ancient Indian trading post known as Woonasquashqua which lay between Narragansett Bay and Portsmouth Harbour. After years of searching two men found the right spot - just north of present day Main Street - on October 26th 1786 when they stumbled upon a rich coal deposit near modern day Cumberland Point On November 3rd they SOLD their shares to local resident Nicholas Provine for $1 each On January 25th 1801 – less than one month after its incorporation as a town – Cranston's first store was opened by Nathan Smith with goods brought over by boat from Newport News/Williamsburg via Narragansett Bay. That same year saw the opening of the first schools in Cranston; Grades PK-8 were held at First Congregational Church until 1825 when it moved to Beal’s Chapel which still stands today within walking distance of most residents today In 1803 James Fenton bought 625 acres (241 hectares), northwest corner of downtown area from Nicholas Provine for $2 per acre . This property became known as "Fenton's Fork" because it divided into several tracts or "folds" which are still visible today including present day Westerly Boulevard NE & US Route 401 . With this acquisition Fenton helped spur development around what is now downtown and started what would become oneof Americas largest lumberyards On September 21st 1830 an act entitled An Act To Establish A Town In And Around Providence Was Passed By The General Assembly Of Rhode Island & approved And Signed By Governor John Bristol As follows: “Be it enacted by me further enacted That all plantations within sd Province Usable For Development Of Agriculture Or Commerce Shall be establishd In accordance with Law And No Town Or Village ought To Be Unlawfully Built Without Consent From Theorphan Society Which Will Enjoy All Privileges Arises Therefrom” This markedthe beginningofwhatwouldbecomeoneofthemostimportant DevelopmentsinCranston Over ensuing decades various stores sprang up along Westerly Blvd., primarily catering to easternistrates living off Court House square but also featuring general merchandise like radios, typewriters and vacuum cleaners starting at around 50¢
