Cranston, Rhode Island is a small town located on the southeast coast of Providence County. The population was 23,421 at the 2010 census. Cranston is home to three coffeehouses and two espresso bars. It's also known for its cheese festival, which takes place in late September and early October. In 1894, the first coffee house in Cranston opened named The Globe Coffee House after the paper that served as its namesake. Over time, other cafes followed suit including The Patriot Coffee House in 1922 and The Ritz-Carlton Café in 1934. By 1945, there were six coffee houses operating in Cranston with over 100 customers each. Today, there are three coffeehouses located within walking distance of one another - The Globe Coffee House (formerly), Peet's Coffee & Tea Lounge and Java Joes Espresso Bar - making it easy to find a cup of Joe hereabouts! Additionally, two espresso bars have made their way into our town by popular demand - Dunkin' Donuts at 207 Water Street and Starbucks on Market Street (just past Warwick Avenue). In addition to all this fine caffeinewarechery, you can enjoy some cranberry preserves or apple cider vinegar from one of our local farmers markets during fall/winter when they're open! In recent years we've seen an increase in gift giving towards coffeehouse gifts such as cups or mugs adorned with special designs or customized with someone's name or logo. We even see people handing out custom designed printed cards written about their favorite coffee shop! The city also started to develop as a center for coffee production in the late 1800s, with many small mills operations. By the 1920s, Providence had become a major coffee producer and by 1930 it was considered one of America's leading brewing cities. The decades following World War II saw an increase in caffeine consumption as people transitioned into middle-class lifestyles and began working longer hours. This led to an increased demand for soluble coffee beans, which necessitated larger mills able to produce large quantities at low cost. Cranston's dominance in this field continued until the 1970s when other regions began producing more quality soluble coffees. Today, Cranston is still home to some of America's best-quality soluble coffees and its Coffee Masters store continues serve up delicious cups of java every day!
Cranston is a town in Rhode Island, situated on the Narragansett River. The population was 11,692 at the 2010 census. Cranston was first settled by English colonists in 1636. It became a city in 1847 and is the oldest of Rhode Island's six cities. The town was also home to the now defunct Providence Journal newspaper until it closed its doors in 2017. The name of Cranston comes from General James Oglethorpe, who served as governor of Rhode Island from 1785-1787 and as brigadier general in Continental Army during the American Revolution. He named his hometown after General Oglethorpe because he thought it would be a more beautiful place than any other he had seen while serving as governor. Before becoming an incorporated town, Cranston was known as part of Warwick Township. In 1793, Warwick Township split into three parts: West Warwick (now Pawtucket), East Warwick (now Fall River), and Cranston Township (now South Shore). Cranston was annexed into Fall River Township on January 1, 1837. On July 8, 1847, Fall River township merged with Worcester County to form Rhode Island Colony government under Governor George Washington Gage. On January 1st 1959, Act No 782 created independent townships within RI for various reasons including economy and municipal consolidation which were not followed through with throughout much of RI till recently when this process accelerated thru Townshend Amendment #2 passed November 3rd 2016 by both political parties making then Police Commissioner Mayor effective immediately with no power to veto or change same without written consent from both political parties also giving such authority to Select Board elected directly by residents over mayor only revoking power if they feel too powerful
