Cranston, Rhode Island is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. The ethnic group makeup of Cranston is 98% white and 1% black. Coffee has been a part of the city's culture for over 100 years. Coffee beans were first grown in Brazil and roasted here before being exported to other parts of the world. In 1892, Reverend J. B. Henson established an agricultural cooperative which grew coffee and sold it to various merchants throughout the city. In 1904, Mr. John Fenton bought land around Meeting House Square and began roasting coffee there himself with help from his son-in-law, Jesse Landeros Jr.. By 1912, Fenton had built three houses on the square that became known as "The Three Fents." During World War II, many local businesses closed their doors due to rationing but most reopened after the war ended. In 1951, Mr. Harry Sothern opened his own grocery store on Meeting House Square and soon started selling pre-packaged coffee beans from his home kitchenette windowsills.-MrSothern would continue to sell coffeepaks (now called Keurig Koffee) untilhis death in 1988.-Today's oldest continuously operating business in Cranston is Lucky's Cafeteria which opened its doors in 1936.-Cafeteria owner LuckyBloom has been running her business uninterrupted since then

The first European settlement in what is now Cranston was made by Captain John Smith on September 11, 1607. He named it after his home borough of Cromwell in England. The first permanent settler arrived in 1629 and soon began to grow crops and raise livestock. By 1724, there were more than 100 people living in Cranston. On July 4, 1776, Cranston voted to become a part of the United States of America as an answer to Independence petitions submitted by other towns in Rhode Island. On November 3, 1787, Congress passed a bill naming Cranston as the capital of new Providence County and adopting its seal that same year. The original courthouse was destroyed by a fire in 1836 and replaced with another building which still stands today. In 1903–04, cranston hosted the annual Newport Folk Festival which helped create national awareness for folk music and culture. In 1966-67 cranston played host to both NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinals (Marquette versus Duke) as well as their championship game against Davidson College; their only title appearance since joining Division II during prior years (1958-1959). In 1978-79 cranSTON became one of only two small US cities ever awarded city status when then Mayor Thomas Fennelly announced that all nonresidential properties within city limits would be treated as residential properties for tax purposes – creating a mixed-use development known as “City Hall Square” – becoming one of North America’s most vibrant downtown cores with over 50 businesses operating within walking distance including several restaurants/bars/nightlife venues/shopspaces etc., comprising some 30% market share for retail space within 2 miles (3 km) radius! Today Cranston continues to thrive economy wise thanks largely to its strong commercial base characterised by large anchor tenants like Woonsocket Job Corps & Training Center - 1st largest employer since 2002 & Warwick Elementary School - Marchetti Middle School's 10th largest student body
