Cranston is a city in Rhode Island, United States. The population was 14,594 at the 2010 census. The area that now makes up Cranston was originally part of the town of Providence. The city was founded on July 4, 1795 by Nicholas Gorham and others as a small settlement on cranberry bushes between the Narragansett and Pawtucket Rivers. In 1814, it became a separate town under the name of Warwick. On December 12, 1824, Warwick merged with Cranston to form what is now Cranston.

The first European settlement in what is now Cranston was made by John Winthrop in 1638. Afterward, many more Europeans followed suit until 1820 when everyone living within definable distance of Portsmouth left for lack of land or other opportunities in New England. However, despite this exodus, Cranston survived as an agricultural village with farmers growing crops such as corn and wheat along with raising livestock and fishing families taking advantage of tidal waters for their catches including crabs and lobster. “In 1736 Roger Sherman set up shop at one end of Newport Road opposite where he had lived since1638-9 When it became clear that there would be no new land available near Portsmouth so soon after King George II's accession his goods were taken down from the road between Newport Road junction (then called ‘Newport Market Place’) and CRANSTON PLACE where they still are today…….. His wife Widow Fenton carried on business here before moving away about 1740 but their daughter Mrs Cook continued this until her death about 1800…………….. By 1800 most or all goods had been removed from CRANSTON PLACE………. It was not until 1861 when an act giving 1/- per bushel to each person allowed small farmers like ourselves some compensation for having lost our main market place……………. Today we still have some old buildings here………………………………………………………………………………….. One possible explanation for their long life may be that with only limited interaction with other parts of RI they were well able to develop strong relationships with key people/ institutions which lasted into later years……………." -John Ewart MacNamara
