The Marine Corps was founded in 1845 as the United States Marines. The first marine battalion was raised in Rhode Island in 1855 and the Marine Barracks were established in Central Falls, Rhode Island on September 15, 1861. The Marine Barracks served as a barracks for new marines who were called to active duty during the American Civil War and World War I. In 1955, the Marine Barracks was decommissioned and the present Marine Corps Base at Central Falls was opened. Central Falls is home to one of the most famous Marines of all time- Major General John J. Pershing. During World War II, General Pershing led his troops across Normandy and France to victory over Nazi Germany and Japan. As a result of his heroism, he became known as "The Unknown Soldier." In 1946, General Pershing received an honorary degree from Brown University. He remains enshrined at Central Falls Memorial Park where he rests between two bronze statue of marines who served with him during World War II: First Lieutenant Chester Aiken (1912-2008)and Second Lieutenant Lawrence Sledge (1924-2007). In 1961, when America gained its independence from Great Britain, many young people began to join the military after seeing service abroad. To commemorate this momentous event, local businesses decided to give back to their community by selling gift items related to military service or patriotism such as postcards or T-shirts emblazoned with patriotic slogans like "For Our Troops" or "All Eyes On Thee". This tradition continued through Vietnam Era when local businesses sold items including buttons and mugs bearing messages like "To Our Soldiers And Sailors" or simply "For The Service We Serve". After 9/11/2001 attacks on New York City and Washington D.C., many business owners decided it was time to start stocking items related specifically to marine service or patriotism once again!
