York, Pennsylvania is a small town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,055 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. York was founded in 1753 by George Washington and was the capital of the Province of Pennsylvania from 1783 to 1800. The first European settlers in what is now York were French colonists who arrived around 1679. The first permanent English settler in York was James Doone, who purchased land near modern-day Northgate on October 14, 1753 from John Armstrong for £240 pounds sterling. Doone named his new settlement after his home town of York (then a part of England). On December 15, 1754,Doone formally erected a wooden stockade on what is now Market Street in order to protect his new land from Native American attack. In 1814destructive floods destroyed much of YORK'S early history - but some evidence suggests that one or more aboriginal groups may have been living there before Europeans started arriving. One theory suggests that the Potomac River Valley had been inhabited by hunter-gatherers for as long as 10,000 years; when white people began settling down here they discovered these pre-historic humans and started trading with them. Another theory suggests that First Nations people may have aided early European explorers during their exploration through trade and raiding missions; however this relationship cannot be confirmed without further research and documentation. Some historians argue that it would not have taken very long for white people to become aware of the strategic location at which York sat - its close proximity to both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia made it an ideal stopover on travel routes across Western Pennsylvania at the time! With its rich colonial history and abundant resources - including coal and iron ore - York quickly became one of America's most important towns during its late eighteenth century heyday under Governor Samuel Wilson and Mayor James Craighead Sr.. On July 26, 1800the federal government recognized British Columbia as a separate province within Canada; consequently all British Columbia lands within present day Pennsylvania were transferred to Ottawa pursuant to this act known as "The Act of Union". This event represented an incredible step forward for both Canadain Canadians and American Pennsylvanians alike as it created a united front against English taxation efforts throughout British North America! Since then many events have occurred which has shaped how today's residents view their hometown: such as Hurricane Andrew devastating Pinellas County in 1992 which left many buildings damaged or even destroyed; economic recession hit YORK hard during 2008-2009 causing unemployment rates amongst local businesses soaring above 50%; plus numerous natural disasters such as THE MASSACRE OF YORKtowne Township resulteding in loss/damage totaling over $27 million dollars!!! In short we can say that while various challenges still face our community today there are also many successes associated with our past including: original settlers coming back after more than two centuries away; multiple waves of immigrants arrive starting with Germans followed by Irish Catholics during latter half of 19th century; local businesses thriving despite difficult times while maintaining cultural values & traditions; countless memories shared between friends & family
