The York National Guard was established on December 15, 1795 by an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. The unit was made up of state militias and volunteer units from the counties of York and Cumberland. The first national guard detachment arrived in York on July 1, 1800. On November 9, 1802, the first battalion of the York National Guard was organized under command of Colonel John Armstrong. When a war with France began in 1803, the state militia units were called into service as part of the Pennsylvania Volunteer Army. The York National Guard participated in many engagements during this time including battles at Hawley's Mill (July 3), Gettysburg (September 13) and Monmouth Junction (November 26). In 1804, Congress created a Regular army to suppressadvertisers' rights proceedings against volunteers under section 10a of the United States Constitution. The regiment Ithaca Volunteers served in this cavalry brigade under Brigadier General James Wilkinson until it disbanded on September 15, 1807 due to lack of replacement troops. In 1840, when martial law was declared following Andrew Jackson's victory over Major General Daniel Morgan at New Orleans, all military forces were placed under control of Governor Thomas Mifflin who appointed civilian officials to manage them. In 1861, when Confederate forces invaded Maryland along with other southern states, Captain George Hallett organized and led an 8-man company from YORK FAIRFAX COUNTY NATIONAL GUARD as onehalf unit with Confederate officers & men from MONTGOMERY COOPERATIVE FOREST PARTY CAVALRY . At Antietam Heights Battle Company led 2nd Brigade assault for Union Lt Col Gouverneur Ketchum’s Assault Infantry Regiment brigades North side across open field against unorganized Rebel pickets

The first European settlement in what is now York County was made by the French in 1763 on the east bank of the Susquehanna River, about south of present-day downtown York. The area that would become York County was part of Lancaster County until 1784 when it became part of Pennsylvania. In 1814, following the Mexican–American War, General Andrew Jackson invaded and took control of Mexico City from Mexico in what is known as the Battle of San Jacinto. For three days and nights he fought against vastly superior Mexican forces under Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna; after victory had been won at Palo Alto Bridge over a creek calledancho (now Prospect Park), General Jackson marched his army into Mexico City to take possession and install President Porfirio Diaz as its provisional president. The town of York was founded on November 7, 1814 by Hugh Allan and others who sailed downriver from Kingston upon Hull on Board "Anna" with supplies for General Jackson's Expedition against Mexico City under Commodore John Dickey. Allan named his new town for James Hays—the first Territorial Governor general appointed by Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War—because he felt that Hays' death would promote peace and conciliation among all parties involved in the war effort. This event helped popularize congressional representation throughout much of North America because all major wars were fought through congress rather than directly by armies or militias led by generals like Napoleonic France had done before them. York has been inhabited by humans since before 8000 BC, and is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited places on Earth. The first permanent European settlement in what is now York County was founded by early French immigrants in 1753 as Fort Pitt. When Great Britain acquired control of North America during the Seven Years' War, it began to buildforts along its new border with France in an attempt to keep that country from expanding into British territory. In 1764, these forts were renamed for George Washington and Peterborough Fortress became known as Yorktown (after King George II's home city of Peterborough). In 1768, when work began on Pittsburgh's New Bridge over the river, settlers from both sides of the Allegheny arrived in large numbers. By 1772, about 60% of all people living in York had come from some form of European descent. The following year saw another major influx when settlers from Philadelphia arrived to establish a rival trade town called Germantown. From this initial settlement grew a diverse community that continues to thrive today: Catholics (who formed their own parish), Germans (mostly miners who came downriver), Irishmen (largely agriculturalists), Blacks (many slaves brought over throughAfrica) and Asians (such as Japanese Americans who started arriving after World War II). The late 18th century saw important changes within York County itself; land prices began to rise and villages such as Kingston-on-the-Hudson lost much of their importance as commercial centers due to advances in transportation and communication technologies. However, many aspects of traditional culture continue to be experienced here: many people still speak Old English or Scots; there are several local breweries; and there are continuing celebrations honoring traditional foods and events such as harvest festivals or fairs
