The area that now makes up York was originally called Monongahela Township but was renamed for King George II of Great Britain after he visited the town in 1797. York is a borough in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, located in York County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 9,545. The borough was formed from part of the former township of York and is bordered by Westmoreland to the west and Centre to the east. The first European settlers arrived in what is now York Township on April 14, 1753, when George Washington's party passed through on their way from Philadelphia to Harrisonburg, Virginia. The first town site was chosen two miles east of present-day Yorktown Avenue at what is now called Strawberry Hill Road (now State Route 21). On July 8, 1753, the Township Committee chose a new location for the town site on land that had been donated by Colonel John Pennsylvanian and his wife Martha Custis Marshall. In 1755, Captain James Fenton led an expedition across Lancaster Sound to explore possible sites for a settlements in North America. He recommended York as one such site after visiting many different locations including this one which he named "Fenton's Ford". In December 1755 Captain Fenton returned with news that there were already people living here and he advisedCaptain Thomas Wolfe not to establish any permanent settlement because he felt it would be difficult to control them once they had access to firearms. However Captain Wolfe decided against abandoning his original plan and built Fort Prince George at what is now known as Beaver Dam Road (now State Route 309) in spring of 1756 following instructions from General Forbes who told Wolfe that if he established a fort within three miles of Philadelphia then other British forces could march into Philadelphia without fear of attack from the French or Spanish armies which were besiegingPhiladelphia at this time). The construction began soon after and soon there were several houses erected around an open square where today's Market Square stands downtown. It wasn't until late summer of 1756 that troops under Lieutenant Colonel Robert Ewing arrived in search for plunder taken during King George II's military campaign against Revolutionary France known as La Guerre des États-Unis (the American War). From February – May 1757 various stores began opening up throughout Pennsylvania due mainly to food shortages caused by war efforts plus some business opportunities developed due to English trading regulations which limited foreign trade with Ireland angering certain colonists who saw this as another step away from their ancestral homeland .
