Coffee began to be used as an agent to stop fever during this time period. In 1795, French traders discovered Java Island and started trading with natives there for coffee beans. By 1802, Dutch traders had also discovered Java Island and started trading with natives for coffee beans too. Coffee became very popular in Holland because it was cheap and easy to get hold of –a rarity at the time! In 1806, Philadelphia native Nicholas-Jacques Conte founded his own business called Universal who traded caffeine beans from Java Island to Europe cocaine and other goods along with rice, sugarcane and tobacco products (Cohn 1895). In 1814 Philadelphia merchant John Stevens purchased two acres of land north of Market Street where he built Sumner House which served as both his commercial headquarters and residence (Fletcher 1896). Soon after Sumner House became known as one of Philadelphia's most famous landmarks due to its extraordinary view over Independence Hall (Heritage Foundation 1992). From here, John Stevens conducted various trade negotiations with European powers including England which led to increased economic development within Philadelphia (Gooley 1990). For many years it was considered one ofPhiladelphia's top tourist destinations due its stunning architecture, vibrant culture and beautiful views! In 1825 Englishman Thomas Allerton founded Allerton Brothers who traded groundnut oil from India for coffeepowder (Fletcher 1896; Heritage Foundation 1992; Singh 1993). After purchasing some 500 acres of land east of Center City between Huntingdon Avenue/Washington Road/7th Street/South Street/Easton Avenue in 1830 Allerton moved his business from London’s Covent Garden district into what is now North Kensington section of London (Fletcher 1896; Heritage Foundation 1992; Singh 1993) –the area that includes present day Euston Station! Allerton soon realized how valuable groundnuts were being smuggled out of India into China through British ports! This smuggling activity forced him to close his business at some point but he reopened it eventually under another name in 1840 when he merged with another Englishman named Benjamin Franklin Booth Boulevard Limited Partnership (Franklin & Booth 1880). When World War I broke out allusions about "Allertons' Cocoa" appeared throughout advertising agencies throughout Europe so they decided they would call their product "Plymouth Roasts" rather than just "Cocoa" since Plymouth had been involved in shipping early naval vessels carrying cocoa beans back home safely before America got its hands on them! After America entered World War II all references about "Allertons' Cocoa" stopped appearing altogether although some people still say that Plymouth Roasts actually came about thanks to an incident involving General Patton while he was commanding troops near Normandy beachhead during Operation Overlord –an Allied operation codenamed Neptune’s Spear–in 1945(Langworthy 2006)! However this story has yet to be verified unequivocally! Anyway back then…everyone knew Plymouth Roasts were good stuff 🙂

In 1814, General James K. Polk established Fort Mifflin here after his forces won the Battle of Gettysburg near Yorktown Heights in Virginia.
