The Wyomissing Coast Guard Station was founded in 1892 as a small barracks on the South Branch of the Susquehanna River. The first Coast Guard unit in Wyomissing was an engine crew, which served until 1900. In 1902, the station became a command post for the newly created Pennsylvania State Police. In 1916, the Coast Guard Station moved to its current site on Main Street and First Avenue in Wyomissing. The station played an important role in law enforcement during World War I and World War II. It was also responsible for providing security atsynchronized with United States military operations overseas. After the war, the station continued to play an important role in law enforcement until it closed in 1971. Since its founding, Wyomissing Coast Guard Station has awarded many prestigious awards including being one of only two stations ever honored with a Congressional Gold Medal (the other being Fort Worth Naval Air Station). The station has also been home to many distinguished members of our community such as Commandant James L. McDonald and Captain Arthur Pyle who both served as commanding officers during World War II and Korea respectively. Today, Coast Guard Station Wyomissing continues to provide essential law enforcement services to our community by guarding our waterways and maritime interests while contributing to local economic development through its programs such as boat safety awareness campaigns and drug interdiction initiatives

Wyomissing is a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading Area and its ZIP code is 18609. Wyomissing is located on the Susquehanna River and it has a humid continental climate (Köppen: Dfb) with hot summers and mild to cool winters. The first settler in what is now Wyomissing was Abram Kapp in 1799. Kapp had come from upstate New York and he named his new land "Wyoming" after the Wyoming Valley in England where he had been born. Abram's grandson John Kapp set out to explore this new land and discovered many villages along the Susquehanna River before returning home in 1814. In 1827, Isaac Hecker founded Heckerstown near present-day Wyomissing as a post office for settlers coming downriver from Huntingdon Township east of Lehigh Valley Railroad tracks. The first store opened in Heckerstown on October 15, 1827 by Jacob Ducharme. By 1830 there were thirteen stores operating within ten miles of Wyomissing! In 1830, George Stephenson built the Lehigh Valley Railroad which connected Philadelphia with Allentown via Bethlehem (then called Scranton). This railroad made travelling westward much easier so people could get their goods faster than they could when travelling downriver by boat or wagon! As more people started moving westward into Pennsylvania, they needed ways to get food and materials back east so businesses began opening up all over central PA to provide these services! On February 17, 1838, seventy-one residents of Heckerstown formed the townsite of Wyomissing under charter from Providence Township northwest of Reading while still living in Heckerstown themselves! On July 3rd same year father Isaac Hecker presented two deed lots amounting to $1 each to Amos Bedrosian who lived next door on Potter Avenue south of Main Street; Uriah Schneier who lived north of Center Street; Solomon Rabinowitz who lived east of Center Street; David Levy who resided southeast corner lot #4; Nathan Tishkoff who resided northeast corner lot #5; Drury Berman who resided southwest corner lot #6; Nicholas Myerheimer resident west side Lots 2 & 4 & Lot 5 facing North between Spring Garden Road & Third Streets – this area became known as Village Square today! The town boundaries were changed several times during Early Years due too occasional flooding which destroyed homes upstream making it difficult for farmers to grow crops around their homes since water couldn’t flow through their property anymore without destroying it!! Finally on November 9th 1860 when Lancaster County was created all that remained was Friendship Township including most if not all properties comprising present day Wyomissing including lots 2-4-5 abovementioned “Village Square” today!!! It wasn't until about 1880 when electric lighting became available for use that businesses started opening up again!! Businesses such as ammunition dealers opened up soon followed by grocery stores such as Harris' Grocery Store (now Kroger), Mead's grocery store (now Meyers Bros.), Pharmacy (later Shoppers Drug Mart,) Post Office Department store (now PNC Bank,) Furniture store (later Joesky's Hardware,) blacksmith shop(later Wernham Hoggs Forge Cooperative.) After World War I when things slowed down due to increased production quotas imposed by the war effort some small industry reopened but most everything closed thereafter during the 1920s thru 1930s Great Depression era……….What we experienced during those years cannot be compared even remotely with what occurred just a few decades ago during our earlier industrial Revolution days…..Today there are very few businesses left that once constituted an important part of our local economy…..When you look at things like this you really have an appreciation for how time has worked against us……………..Today one can only imagine how difficult it must have been for pioneer families back then tryingto make ends meet………There are no schools here now..........Well maybe there used once be one but that building went away sometime during prohibition Era……….Nowadays you would have To travel quite some way outside the village limits just To find aware anyone knows anything about anything!!

Wyomissing was founded in 1795 by settlers from Delaware and York County, Pennsylvania. The first school in Wyomissing was built on land donated by Reverend John Dickinson and was open to boys only. The community had no drinking water until 1847 when a well began working in what is now the Township Park area. In 1870, an Evangelical Lutheran Church (today's First Lutheran Church) was erected with $5,000 from Peter Krieger and his wife Anna Lappin Krieger. In 1935, Wyomissing became a borough within Johnstown Boroughship. On November 4th of that year, it became an independent municipality with its own mayor and council members.
