The Williamsport National Guard was organized on September 14, 1861, in response to the Civil War. The Guard became a state militia on December 15, 1911. The Guard is composed of both active duty and reserve members. It has a total strength of over 4,000 men. The first unit to be constituted as the Williamsport National Guard was Company A (1st Regiment) of the 2nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment on September 14, 1861. This company was disbanded after only three months due to lack of volunteers. Company B (2nd Regiment) of the 2nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment was also constituted on September 14th but did not serve until October 1st because their regiment had been mobilized for war two days earlier and were not allowed to return home until after the hostilities had ended. In 1862, Company C (3rd Regiment) from Lancaster County joined Company A in constituting the Williamsport National Guard and served until April 1863 when they were mustered out with their unit due to expiration of their term of service. After disbandment all companies except Company D which formed Company G on November 12th 1861 arrived in Williamsport between February 6-March 3, 1862 under command of Captain John Pugh who commanded 1st Battalion Second Brigade Pennsylania Volunteers Militia District No 9 On Febuary 20th 1912 at 11:00am local time Company H (5th Regiment), First battalion Third brigade Pennsylvania Volunteers Militia District No 9 consisting mostly white men from Erie County arrive in town from Altoona where they’ve been camped since Christmas season 1912

The Williamsport National Guard is a unit of the United States Military. The unit was activated on October 16, 1914 and has been active since that date. It originally consisted of 9 companies with a strength of 1,500 men. As the War progressed, the National Guard grew to include an additional 26 companies with a total strength of over 150,000 men.
Williamsport is a small town located in the Allegheny Valley of Pennsylvania. The population was 9,577 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Butler County. The community was founded by John Williams in 1827 as a log-and-mud settlement on the east side of what is now known as Coal Creek. Williamsport grew rapidly because of demand for lumber from nearby mines and mills. By 1900, the town had become an important transportation and communication center due to its location near two major railroads. In 1907, Williamsport became home to the first U.S. international aviation exhibition and won the prize for best airport design that year. Williamsport has experienced many changes over the years, including annexation by Pittsburgh in 1903 and then by Philadelphia in 1975; both cities surrendered control to Butler County when they merged into Pennsylvania’s larger city system. However, many of the original features of Williamsport remain today, such as its large number of historic homes dating back to before 1800 (most are still inhabited).

Assemblements were required only during times of insurrection or invasion and could not take place in places where there was an established government. The act also created reserve units called “volunteer companies” which could be called up for wartime service at short notice. On February 14, 1861, Abraham Lincoln signed into law a bill creating a standing army known as “the National Guard” which would remain inactive until called into active duty by proclamation from the president. A total of 134 states had joined forces with the Union under this new organization and it began operations on April 12th 1861 under General Ulysses S. Grant who commandedeerred it until 1865 when he resigned due to health problems In 1932, Congress passed legislation authorizing women to serve in their local national guard units as long as they meet certain qualifications such as being unmarried pregnant and registered with a social security number. This change took place on October 22nd 1933 and female guards began serving throughout America beginning on November 3rd 1933
