Williamsport is a town in Williamsport County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,521 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous town in the county and part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The primary industry in Williamsport has been fishing for tuna and other marine animals since 1786 when a small mill was founded here by Sylvester Potter. The first store on Main Street opened in 1853. The Potter family ran the business until it went out of business in 1907. In 1925, Edward Cushman opened a grocery store and continued to run it until his death in 1984. He had been its owner since 1922. In 1955, Harry Weisman became the first person to open an auto dealership here; it closed in 1978 after becoming too successful for local dealerships to keep up with its demand. As part of celebration of its Centennial Year, Williamsport made history by becoming one of just five American towns (along with Framingham, MA; Hartford, CT; North Bend, WA; and Quincy, MA) that hosted World's Fair exhibitions from October 21-27th 1901 under pavilion No., "The Great Exposition" which was located on Belle Isle near Buffalo Bayou between Richmond Park and Penn's Landing across from City Hall on Capitol Hill Streetscape Today there are numerous businesses downtown including: banks/finance companies/banking institutions such as JPMorgan Chase & Co., Wells Fargo & Company, HSBC Holdings PLC., Comcast Corporation et al.; restaurants such as Subway sandwich shops and Dunkin' Donuts franchises As one of America's oldest ports Preble Shipbuilding Incorporated (founded 1892), Williamsport has long been an important center for maritime trade with Europe and Asia through container ships dockside along Delaware Bay connecting Willingboro Pointkline Marine Terminal southward to Philadelphia proper via Market Street Bridge (the former Elizabethtown Pier now home to Independence Seaport Museum) while also providing access to I-95E providing easy transportation into eastern Pennsylvania from points north In recent years shipping containers have become less common as container ship yards have moved away from using them due to environmental concerns but new promenades called "Cities Without Ports" have sprung up around downtown consisting mostly of large warehouses housing state-of-the art shipping containers exhibiting aspects of urban planning including walkable streetscapes , bike lanes , public transportation options etc Williamsport also contains two major shopping districts: One centered around Main Street known locally as "The District"; while another called "The Edge" surrounds Cadiz Square developed by developers who proposed bringing high end retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue department stores within walking distance along Lombard Street adjacent to PA Track Light Railway

Williamsport was founded in 1795 by John Nicholson and his family as a small community on the Susquehanna River. In 1814, Williamsport became part of the Second District of Pennsylvania under General George Washington during the American Revolution. Williamsport was founded in 1753 by the brothers John and Peter Williams. The town was named for Lord Williams, who donated the land. The first settler in Williamsport, Benjamin Wilkinson, arrived in 1754. In 1765, the Colonel James Moore family moved to Williamsport from Lancaster County and began a farm named Moore's Mills. By 1800, there were over 100 homes in Williamsport. In 1814, William Penn established the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia and set up a college town around it. In 1825, General Anthony Wayne fought his last battle at Gettysburg and died in nearby Monmouth County; this event is sometimes called "The Battle of Gettysburg." After General Wayne's death, many people from across Pennsylvania came to live in Williamsport because of its close proximity to the University of Pennsylvania.
