Williamsport is a small town in Pennsylvania, located on the Susquehanna River. The population was 9,813 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Williamsport-Bethlehem-Easton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Williamsport were Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants and animals for their food. The first known European to visit Williamsport was John Smith in 1678. Williamsport was founded by Nicholas Wright on May 12, 1759 as a trading post between Philadelphia and Lancaster County. Williamsport was originally called Middlebrook because it lay between two forks of the Susquehanna River. In 1814, General George Washington gave the town its present name of Williamsport after he met William Scranton there during his military campaigns in Pennsylvania that year. One reason given for the choice of name was that "the river's current forms so many channels near these places" (Frazier). In 1821, Andrew Mellon donated land to make way for a college which would be named after him when it became available. That same year, James Buchanan visited Williamsport while campaigning for president and made speeches at local businesses and churches before returning home to campaign successfully against John Quincy Adams in November of that year. By 1828, four colleges had been established: Dickinson College (1829), Allegheny College (1830), Western University (1831), and Temple University (1832). During World War I, Wilson airfield No. 1 served as an American airbase from 1917 to 1919; then it reverted back to farmland until being used as a baseball diamond from 1934 until 1991 when it closed down due to budgetary constraints following World War II . Afterward, much of the surrounding area became developed into housing subdivisions such as Canonsburg Township with its own ZIP code 21061; nearby homes also began popping up around Interstate 81/I-95 Airport with addresses like "Allentown", "Doylestown", etc., making it difficult for residents living off-campus or within walking distance to maintain any semblance of continuity with their ancestral land base

Williamsport is a small town in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. The population was 2,526 at the 2010 census. The town and surrounding area were named for General James Wilkinson, who fought in the American Revolution. Williamsport is located on the Susquehanna River and is bordered by Chambersburg to the north, Midland to the east, and Shamokin to the south. The first settler in Williamsport was John Proctor in 1798. William Penn donated land for a courthouse and school in 1811. The community started as a farming village with about seventy residents. By 1825, however, there were over one hundred people living in Williamsport. In 1829, A wagon train of thirty-six refugees from Ireland arrived at Williamsport and began their journey westward. They were sponsored by Commodore Lewis Cass which made it possible for them to find work on America's new continent. In 1830, Colonel Ebenezer Richardson built a mill on the river near present day Main Street. The village grew rapidly due to this business opportunity and soon boasted two churches (oneMethodist and one Presbyterian) as well as several stores, schools, residences and mills including Richardson's Mill which still stands today adjacent to downtown Williamsport." In 1832-33 local resident William Hargrave built a dam across the Susquehanna River which created an artificial lake that served as a swimming hole for locals and visitors alike until 1935 when it was filled with water again following an earthquake swarm that hit nearby Antrim Township during that year's floodplain rehabilitation project overseen by then Borough President Harry Jaffe Jr.. Some of these early settlers also founded what would become known as "The Hargrave brothers" lumber milling dynasty that continues today providing goods necessary for everyday life such as plywood door frames used throughout North America while also conducting research into sustainable forest management techniques utilizing Controlled Forest Management plans developed under his guidance during his tenure at our company...Williamsport has always been proud of its many accomplishments within its boundaries - starting with its incorporation into municipalities form 1834 until becoming an unincorporated township recognized by PA state law effective November 3rd 2006 On July 15th 1800 Colonel Ebenezer Richardson laid down bricks of what would later become known as "Richardson Mill". There are three brick walls remaining from this time period around town center still standing today! Many thanks go out to those responsible for maintaining these Walls especially Mrs./Mr./Daughter/Son Tommy Richardson who does all sorts of odd jobs around here :) Williamsport was once home to some very famous residents including Commodore Lewis Cass himself! He lived here from 1830-1836 while he was Captain Commanding United States Ship Chesapeake Bay before returning back home to Virginia after Duty called him there...As you can imagine having such high profile neighbors didn't come cheap!
