Williamsport, PA is a small town located in the northeast corner of Pennsylvania, about 20 miles southwest of Philadelphia. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. Williamsport has been inhabited for more than two centuries and today is known for its arts and culture, as well as its manufacturing industry which dates back to the Revolutionary War. The first settlers in what is now Williamsport were farmers who arrived from Ulster County, Ireland in 1795. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Delaware River and named their settlement "Williamsport." In 1812, they founded the town of Mercersburg and later enlarged it to include present-day Williamsport. The first brick building was erected in 1825. There was a rapid growth of trade in Williamsport during the early 1800s due to its location at an important junction onthe Susquehanna River where boats could go both upriver and downriver to bring goods to market. The town's fortunes changed with the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 which linked Philadelphia with New York City by way of Buffalo then Niagara Falls. This new economic development led to increased traffic on Route 6 which passed through Williamsport and created new opportunities for businesses such as tanneries, breweries, grocery stores, post office etc.; also contributing to increased population growth. During World War II, many industries that would have been destroyed by wartime bombing survived thanks to government support such as construction materials (ecclesiasticalmasonry), aircraft parts (astronauts) and automotive components (knob nuts). Today much of this production still takes place within walking distance of downtown Williamsport – including Alcoa aluminum smelters; Bethlehem Steel Corporation’s Lackawanna Works; Honeywell Inc.'s Welch Engine Plant; Magellan Aerospace Industries' Hughes Aircraft Factory; PPG Peacock Paper Mills Inc.'s Central Pipe Workshops/Woolen Mills Complex; United States Rubber Company's DuPont Warehouse - all within easy reach via public transportation or drive-through windows throughout central Pennsylvania. In recent years various efforts have been made by local citizens and organizations including but not limited to: preserving old buildings used for industrial purposes; developing an Arts & Culture program providing access to art galleries & museums throughout central PA; hosting events related thereto annually during Pittsburgh's three week summer festival season; helping contribute towards restoration projects at local historic landmarks like Mercersburg Castle & Iron Mountain Brewery ; working together with other communities across North America celebrating National Historic Preservation Week every November
