Williamsport is a small town in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. It was once the home of the US Army's 7th Infantry Regiment and now houses two military museums: The Williamsport Museum of Art and History and the United States Army War Memorial. The population was 10,526 at the 2010 census. The first army post in Williamsport was Fort Mifflin in 1777. In 1815, the US Army moved its headquarters from Philadelphia to Williamsport after Congress passed an act directing it to do so. The fort served as a garrison for miles around until it closed in 1836. In 1865, General Ulysses S Grant visited Williamsport while on his way towards Gettysburg. He stopped at Fort Mifflin and ordered its destruction; its cannons were melted down and used by Union forces in that battle. The site of Fort Mifflin is now a park named after him. In 1907, General John J Pershing built Camp Forrest on what is now US Route 24 near present-day Mount Carmel Junction Park in honor of his victory over Mexico during World War I. At that time, he also donated land for a parade ground and other military buildings next to Camp Forrest which are still extant today as part of nearby Mount Carmel Cemetery (formerly known as Palestinian Cemetery). An ironclad gunboat called USS Constitution docked at Camp Forrest during American Civil War era; she became famous because her crew shot down Confederate Lt John F Kennedy when his plane flew over Washington D C on 11 July 1865 while he was delivering messages between Richmond Virginia and Baltimore Maryland - one of only three occasions an American warship has ever been credited with shooting down an enemy aircraft (the others being USS Constitution's crew shots Down Japanese Aircraftover San Francisco Bay on 15May 1942).
