Williamsport is a city in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 30,868 at the 2010 census. Williamsport is the home of the Williamsport Air Force Base and also hosts the Moravian College of Business and Economics. The air force base manufactures military helicopters and other aircraft for the United States Air Force. The first helicopter squadron in America was activated at Wright-Patterson AFB on October 26, 1944 as part of USAAF Eighth Air Force. It was components of 2d Bombardment Wing (2 BW). On December 1st 1944 2 BW's first McDonnell Douglas H-4C "Harpers Ferry" helicopter arrived at Wright-Patterson AFB after being unloaded from RAF Coningsby Airport in England. Japanese forces had destroyed the original airfield during World War II so USAF Headquarters decided to build their own facility on land leased from Coningsby Township. This new airport would be known as McCoy Field until it became an active USAF Base in 1957 when it became Wright-Patterson AFB once again with its present name - Williamsport Air Force Base . The nickname "Harpers Ferry" comes from General Curtis Easley who served as Commander, First Tactical Fighter Wing (TCFWS), 3d Special Task Group (TG 3) within Strategic Defense Command (SDC) head quarters - Bridge #1 over Moors River on I-95W near McCoy Field In September 1958 support activities for both CONINGSBY AIRPORT AND WILKESPORT AIR FORCE BASE were combined into one command which was redesignated as Headquarters Fifth AF which included all subordinate commands situated at these two locations plus elements assigned to European Commands located thereon while Sixth AF remained stationed at Patterson AFB This FAXed Order placed w/in HQ 5th AF by MajGen Holland Smith Goodspeed: Thereafter Headquarters Fifth AF moved to newly constructed McCoy AFB north of town and Control OP aircraft have been based here since then including most recent HH-60G Pave Hawk Helicopters currentlybasedatLockheed Martin facilities adjacenttoMcCoyAir Force BaseandAirlines flying out ofWilkesville Municipal Airport . In February 1960 Major General Holland Smith Goodspeed assumed commandof HQ USAF via teletype from Patterson AFB when Gen Carl Spaatz assumedCommandofAFHQ resultantintheintegrationof HQ FifthAFintoAF and Allied Forces Europe under LtGen Hoyt Vandenberg

The area now known as Williamsport was part of Somerset County until 1815 when it was added to York County. The first post office opened in 1782 and the population grew slowly until the late 19th century when industry and other development began to increase the population rapidly. By 1910, Williamsport had become an important railroad junction with tracks running through it from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The town experienced rapid growth during World War II with businesses such as shipbuilding and aircraft production expanding into the area. However, after the war, economic decline set in and poverty became entrenched. In recent years, however, efforts have been made to revitalize the town through community initiatives such as arts & culture programming, infrastructure projects such as a new water main system, and educational opportunities for children.

The town grew rapidly after the construction of the Erie Canal in 1825, which allowed for easy trade between the eastern and western United States. In 1830, the town became part of the new United States of America. The population of Williamsport reached 10,000 by 1860, and it grew even more following the American Civil War. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, Williamsport experienced a period of decline until its rebirth as a manufacturing center during the late 20th century.
