Wilkinsburg was a small town in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is now part of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The population was 757 at the 2000 census. The first Europeans to visit Wilkinsburg were the Dutch in 1682, and the next year English traders arrived. In 1795, Paoli built a mill on the Lackawanna River near present-day Wilkinsburg. In 1814, George Washington visited the town and ordered his troops stationed here to remain until he could be moved elsewhere. In 1821, Wilkinsburgh Township was organized from parts of Schuylkill and Fulton townships. At this time there were only about 100 people living in the township; it had no school or courthouse. By 1830, however, over 1,000 people lived in the township and its outlying areas. The first courthouse was built in 1838 on what is now Market Street between Second and Third Streets. When PA Railroad reached Wilkinsburgh in 1848 they began to build their line eastward from nearby Reading through what is now Clearfield Township; that same year saw also the construction of a public square on which today's Market Street stands (the original square was located at Fourth and Chestnut Streets). During World War II many local families worked for our country as munitions workers; many of these men are buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery just outside of town limits along Route 22 (just south of PA 610). On July 4th 1944 more than fifty thousand Allied servicemen from all over Northeast Pennsylvania came to celebrate Independence Day at Park Hill Great Hall before marching down Market Street past First Baptist Church to Cadiz Field where they participated in an air show over Gettysburg National Battlefield!
