Wilkinsburg is a town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 20,545 at the 2010 census. Wilkinsburg is the second-largest town in Berks County and the third-largest community within the Greater Philadelphia metropolitan area. It lies on the southern border of Montgomery County and straddles both banks of the Susquehanna River. The first settler in what is now Wilkinsburg was John Minor who arrived about 1790 from Westmoreland County, Virginia. In 1814, Major General Andrew Butler founded a small community here named Butlerstown after himself and his father-in-law Colonel Robert Butler (1754–1835). In 1836, John Wistar built a mansion here which became known as Wistar House (now part of University Park). The town name was changed to Wilkinsburg because President James K. Polk tried unsuccessfully to get it changed to Haverford Township during his presidential campaign of 1860. In 1872, two brothers bought 1/2 mile (1 km) of woods east of downtown for $300 and laid out a small township on their land which they called "Wilkinsburgh". On March 15th of that year, they elected George Washington Downing as its first president. They also erected an academy building and schoolhouse there which still stands today; these were among the earliest public buildings in Wilkinsburgh. A post office was established in 1876 by George Linton with ZIP code 21534; mail service began operations on October 2nd of that year. At this time, most residents worked farms or near large manufacturing plants located along roads leading into central Philadelphia then directly into Allentown or Bethlehem whereupon trains transported their products back down those same roads toPhiladelphia markets or factories before being delivered via coach back home again -a process that continues today! In 1906 when America entered World War I, many residents turned out for military duty and many businesses closed due to lack of customers – but Wilkinsburgh refused to go off war production lines! The people here stuck together through hard times until finally defeat came at Vimy Ridge when Germany managed tostorm and capture key partsof our city including much homes valued at over $1 million (!), thereby ruining so many lives&apostles like FDR who had spent years tryingto help us rebuild! Although we lost some homes &apostles along with most jobs during WWII (& more than 100% loss attributable to American munitions manufacture), we remain one determined communityand continue rebuilding even stronger than ever before

Wilkinsburg is a town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading, PA–DE-MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Wilkinsburg was James McDowell in 1799. When the United States acquired it from Great Britain during the American Revolution as part of Philadelphia's Treaty of Paris, McDowell and his family were among those evacuated to Mercer County, West Virginia. In 1802, John Dickinson founded what would become Wilkinsburg on land he purchased from Nicholas Sparks. In 1812, Marshall Wiley erected a log cabin here that served as the town's first courthouse and post office until moved to Reading in 1820. The first school opened in 1814 and served students up until 1861; then it became an academy until it merged with Pittston Academy in 1917. In 1830 Erie Canal began construction through present-day Berks County and soon reached Wilkinsburg; accordingly, canal merchants built warehouses along its banks and many residents took advantage of this new source of income (a rarity at that time). By 1840 almost all of what is now Wilkinsburg had been created: one block adjoined another on three sides downtown – making it one large gridiron street grid patterned after Philadelphia's Center Street – while other blocks lay scattered among small villages situated around Canonsville Creek (now called Mechanicsville). During Reconstruction following the Civil War several stores reopened including Donelson & Maher which operated out of a building located on High Street between Second and Third Streets for more than fifty years before being shuttered by Jno.[1] According to local historian Hilda Sanger "Donelson & Maher" marked one end point where opportunity met adversity for black business owners during Reconstruction - starting with Frederick Douglass' successful effort to open a store near Washington Dining Hall later renamed "Harlem". Black businesses such as these were especially vulnerable to arson or white thieves who targeted them because they could not afford insurance or protection legislation offered to whites. This insecurity led some African Americans - like Jemima Hill -to form their own commercial organizations such as Business Men's Association which helped provide solace during difficult times." The town of Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania was founded in 1788 by the brothers Samuel and David Wilkins. It is named after Captain John Forbes who fought in the American Revolution. The townspeople built a courthouse and a school in 1824. In 1827, the town became part of Lancaster County and was incorporated as a borough. In 1847, the borough was dissolved and Wilkinsburg became an independent village.
