Wilkinsburg is a borough in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown- Wilkes-Barre- Scranton metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Wilkinsburg was Nicholas Sennott who arrived here in 1795 and built a cabin on the present site of the current town hall. Other early settlers were John Sheehan and his family who also settled in this area around 1800. George Washington passed through this area when he paused on his way to Harrisburg for dinner at Valley Forge in 1798. The first store opened here in 1802 by Peter Henshaw and it continued to be run by him until 1835 when it was taken over by Elijah Whitehead Jr. whitehead@adelphiamail.com). In 1814, Revolutions broke out throughout America and William Penn decided to stay behind in Philadelphia after being impeached as Governor of Pennsylvania. He sent his son-in-law Benjamin West to take charge of the government of Lehigh County which included Wilkinsburg. After much discussion among all involved, Benjamin West decided that Wilkinsburgh should remain a part of Lehigh County rather than move closer to Philadelphia which would have had negative consequences for its economy and social fabric.. so he named the new town "Wilkinsburg" after himself and set about building up its infrastructure including a courthouse, jail, schoolhouse (now called East Mountain High School), post office (1812), trading post (1815), Masonic Lodge No 1 (1817), canal landing (1821) and more later! The community's first natural gas explosion took place on December 5th, 1862 while supplies were being transported from anthracite coal mines near Allentown to local residents living near Mount Airy where they would be used for heating purposes! The blast injured over thirty people including many children playing outside who were trapped under rubble! Shortly thereafter work began on what would eventually become the Allentown–Wilkes-Barre Railroad which connected these towns together making it possible for people from both municipalities to get their goods and services anywhere within easy reach!. Today there are several museums located within walking distance of each other: Eastern PA Museum District (including an original Iron Age Burial mound/graveyard) & Western PA Museum District -both located just east of downtown Wilkinsburgh; Ashtabula County Historical Society's former home (& still lived inside); Heritage Village -a replica of an eighteenth century farmers' village complete with agricultural buildings & barns; Amish communities located northeast & southwest of town; as well as numerous restaurant choices close by if you're looking for some down time! Wilkinsburg is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,318 at the 2010 census. It is the namesake of the Wilkinsburg Mountains. The first permanent settlers in what is now Lackawanna County were three families from Maryland who started up the Shenandoah Valley Company in 1799. They named their new settlement after General Sir William Howe's victory over George Washington and his army at Yorktown that year. The company had been asked to provide troops for Lord Dinwiddie's campaign against France and they arrived too late to participate; however, they left behind a gift of land that became Wilkinsburg Township on July 1, 1800. The township was originally divided into two parts: the north side was annexed by Reading on January 1st 1802 while the south side remained part of Scranton until it became a part of Wilkinsburg on November 3rd 1815. The annexation made Wilkinsburg one of the most populous towns in Pennsylvania at that time as well as making it one of its largest municipalities by area – larger than Pittsburgh and Philadelphia combined! On October 15th 1886, iron oremining began operations in what would become known as "the birthplace of steel."
