The Wilkinsburg Area Army detachment (WAA) was activated on July 4, 1917 in response to the Lorraine Incident. At its peak, WAA had about 350 men and women serving in Field Artillery, Signal Corps, Engineer and Infantry regiments. The detachment was re-designated as Task Force Aries on December 1st of that year. It served as a garrison unit untilactivated on February 17th of 1918 when World War I ended. On November 20th of 1942 the Wilkinsburg Area Army detachment again mobilized for World War II when Japan announced their intention to attack Pearl Harbor. On December 7th WAA duty shifted from the barracks at Camp Chase to Hickory Ridge which served as an interim airfield while McKees Rocks became operational. The task force arrived at Hickory Ridge just in time for Japanese aircraft carrier landings on Leyte Gulf on December 10th. After the Battle of Leyte Gulf WAA forces redeployed back to Camp Chase where they remained until September 1945 when hostilities ended and they were disbanded. Today, there is still an active army detachment located in Wilkinsburg with approximately 100 active duty soldiers and civilians who serve under the command of Colonel Tom Koehler III

The Wilkinsburg Museum of Art has a long history of hosting art exhibitions and military deployments. From World War II to the present day, the museum has hosted numerous exhibits catering to both local and international audiences. In 1938, the Wilkinsburg Museum of Art was one of the first museums in America to exhibit paintings by Fernand Léger. In 1951, the museum hosted an exhibition called "America's Armies in Korea" which showcased American troops stationed in South Korea. From 1959-1963, the Wilkinsburg Museum of Art hosted an exhibition called "Soviet Soldiery: Soldiers from Russia Today". The show featured photographs, artwork, and short stories about Soviet soldiers working on American soil. In 1992, the Wilkinsburg Museum of Art exhibited "Toward a New Century: A Collection of Military Photographs" which featured over 100 photographs from various eras documenting American servicemen and women in service around the world. During Operation Desert Storm in 1991-1992, the museum again showcased "Toward a New Century: A Collection of Military Photographs". This time, however, they included photos taken during Operation Neptune's Spear which was conducted against Iraqi forces pursuant to United States President George H. W. Bush's decision to go into Iraq without UN approval. Wilkinsburg is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading Area. The name of the community may be derived from General George Washington's birthplace and estate in nearby Mount Vernon Township (now West Allis), which was also called Wilkinsburgh. The Potowatomie Indians called it "Wilkstown", after one of their leaders. earliest European settlers were Hugh Williamson and his family who founded a gristmill on the Monongahela River in 1796. By 1800, there were five families living there: Williamson, Robertson (brother of 18th century settler James Robertson), Bigelow, Swope and Payne. In 1801-02 Major John Forbes built a log cabin on what is now Main Street near modern day Market Square Park. On October 25, 1802 Forbes married Sarah Thomson from nearby Tioga Township and they began to live in what would become Wilkinsburg as their farmstead became known. In 1805-06 when western Pennsylvania was admitted to the United States as an independent country under the new Constitution, early residents voted to incorporate as a borough with its own government under Article IX Section 2 of that document – this vote being ratified by Congress on December 5th of that year – becoming one of two communities within Lackawanna County to do so prior to its annexation by Scranton in 1912. In 1830/31 Augustus Steeves surveyed and patented land comprising present-day parts of Wilkinsburg Borough including much current Middlebrook Township; he later sold these parcels to others including Benjamin Fenton for $275 cash plus four oxen and forty acres (1 hectare) for each mile(km) traveled from Philadelphia or Pittsburgh where he lived until his death in 1836 aged 71 years). This survey followed up on earlier surveys by Captain John Smith which had been made during British Indian Occupation times authorised by then-Governor Andrew Gregg during his American Revolutionary War campaign against Great Britain (Wilkinsburg was not part of this campaign). Wilkinsburg is a town in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,826 at the 2010 census. Wilkinsburg is part of the Allentown-Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlement in what is now Wilkinsburg was established by Benjamin Franklin and his group of colonists on December 12, 1751. They named their new town for George Washington's father-in-law, Colonel John Butler (1724–1799). The first store in what is now Wilkinsburg was built by David Griggs in 1757. By 1800, there were eight stores and two blacksmiths in the community. In 1812, the Pennsylvania government founded a school here to serve young boys and girls from surrounding villages. It was called "Masters School" until 1868 when it became "Johnstown Academy". By 1828 local farmers had erected a gristmill and distillery that produced whisky for sale around the region. In 1837 residents voted to name their community after William Penn (1688–1776), the founder of Pennsylvania. In 1881 the tracks leading into Allentown were extended eastward towards Bethlehem through what is now Wilkinsburg Township; this made it easier for people to get goods to market beyond Lancaster County without having to go all the way through Lehigh Valley. This also increased economic opportunities for residents here as well as western Pa., which would soon become known as "the bread basket of America." One reason why Allentown grew so rapidly during this time was because many small farmers who could not afford larger inputs or products began selling their produce directly to consumers instead of going through traditional wholesalers or merchants such as Biddle & Sons hardware store near Bethlehem and Samuel robbedon's grocery store onMarket Street in Allentown proper where most perishables were sold before being carted off to Bethlehem for storage or delivery - this allowed these smaller producers access both inside and outside Philadelphia society while maintaining quality control over their product levels ensuring customers never had too much or too little of any given item purchased from them!
