Wilkinsburg is a city in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. Wilkinsburg is the twin town of Reading, Pennsylvania and Johnstown, PA. In 1790, the area that now makes upWilkinsburg was part of Westmoreland Township. It was annexed by Reading in 1837. The community's name likely comes from English settlers Williams and Kittrell who established a farm there in 1792. In 1810, the land that now makes up Wilkinsburg was purchased by Colonel James Moncrieffe for $4 per acre (1/8th of a mile). The new owner started to develop the property into what it is today with slave labor becoming an important part of early development here. The firstpub opened in Wilkinsburg on October 10th 1814 as "The Paper House". This pub became one of the most popular places to drink alcohol in western PA due to its location close to many farms and working people who would come for refreshment during their day-to-day tasks or when they needed something more alcoholic than Unleaded gasoline could provide. When abolitionists began protesting against slavery during the American Civil War (1861-1865), many residents chose not to support either side and pulled out of town; this left much of downtown business abandoned until after 1865 when construction began on several new businesses including a brewery (the present day Monks Brewery) which helped revive downtown around 1870 In 1881, William Pennsylvanian Congressman John Fenton moved his family from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to Wilkinsburg so he could be closer to his constituents in Congress In 1907,a local school district merged with another one near Pittsburgh creating what is now known as School District 20708 In 1916–1917 World War I resulted in increased industry and military activity throughout western PA which caused prices for goods available locally to increase 50%. At this time Leadville became increasingly popular among soldiers because it had become convenient access to refined oil products unavailable southward . Businesses closed down everywhere leadville once again became attractive for miners wanting easy access but less expensive fuels When World War II ended without any major hostilities taking place within Western PA like those experienced during World War 1 & 2 there were predictions that coal production would resume very quickly since Refining plants had been built throughout central PA following prohibition end . However this did not happen as demand decreased after 1945 due primarily due to advancements made by other industries such as automobiles Finally starting around 1960 most manufacturing jobs stopped being generated east of Philadelphia while services continued expanding westward With all these changes over time downtown Wilkinsburg has seen some regression although there are still some standalone businesses operating within its limits

The Wilkinsburg area was settled by the Lenape Native Americans in the 17th century. The first European to visit the area was John Forbes, who explored it in 1682. In 1795, Captain James Ross discovered a salt mine in what is now Wilkinsburg and began operations. By 1800, the salt industry had become so important that Pittsburgh became interested in acquiring Wilkinsburg as well. The two towns merged on February 15, 1803 under one government and were named for General George Washington.
