The town was founded by Nicholas Westfall in 1795 as a post office on the southern edge of what is now Monroe County, Pennsylvania. In 1838, it became part of Erie County, New York. In 1851, it reverted to Pennsylvania after New York statehood. The community name may be derived from "Willek," an early settler and captain in the British army during the American Revolution who helped protect Philadelphia from French troops in 1778-79. In 1901, Wilkes Barre public school district opened with twelve schools: one for boys and eleven for girls; one high school for boys and two for girls; three churches (Church of Christ Lutheran, Methodist Episcopal and Presbyterian); two businesses (the first store built in 1898 and a blacksmith shop); one hotel; one grain elevator; four barns; sixteen farmsteads; seventy houses; and several thousand acres (of which only about twenty are still standing) were annexed to the town between 1897-1901 according to city plans prepared at that time by then-Mayor John Wesselsberger. The annexation also included much land near present-day Scranton/Wilkes Barre Airport which had been purchased by Anthony J. Drexel from his father John Drexel Sr., founder of Duquesne Copper Company Limited - largest copper producer in North America - in 1896 when Jr.'s father bought over most of what would become Lackawanna Township from Ebenezer Furniture Manufacturer James Fenton Morey & Sons Ltd., developer thereof with help from his brother Amos Morey & Sons LLP). By 2001 only about ten percent or so remained standing but plans are to demolish most if not all remaining structures within 10 years or less due to lack of funding – preservationists see this as an opportunity to create contiguous parcels of contiguous residential streetscapes around a major commercial center while preserving older buildings rather than demolition).
