Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania is a small town located in central Pennsylvania. The population was 10,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and is the anchor town for the steel city of Wilkes-Barre. The name "Wilkes Barre" comes from William Penn's decision to settle in this area after leaving Philadelphia in 1784. He named his new settlement for General John Forbes, one of his lieutenants during the American Revolution. The town site was chosen because it had excellent connectivity with other settlements in central Pennsylvania through roads and rails. At first, only men were allowed to live there; later women and children were added. In 1837, John Dennison organized a sawmill at Wilkes-Barre and began producing lumber which he exported to surrounding towns. In 1849, construction began on what would become the first post office in Wilkes-Barre - an L-shaped building on North Main Street that served as both a mail room and Post Office until 1893 when it became a hotel. In 1914, Mayor George Hinton dedicated the new Carnegie library which stands today on South Main Street just east of downtown Wilkes-Barre. In 1935, local businessman Harry Weissell donated land along North Third Street between Market Avenue and Centre Avenue for development into what would become known as "the Weissell Triangle." This area included present day University Park (including its flagship campus), State College (now Pitt), Easton (formerly Lancaster) and much of downtown Wilkes-Barre including its now defunct Central Bridge Company yard where some of America's most famous cars were built between 1923 and 1929 such as Ford Model T's de Koven brothers). During World War II many factories closed due to wartime production restrictions but many others continued operations thanks to financial support from local businesses like Weissell who knew that war production could not be stopped without damaging or shutting down these companies forever. After hostilities ended, many products produced by those factories resumed operation but they were never really back up to speed like they had been before because so much stock had been canned up during war time shortages that few items actually made it onto store shelves again once hostilities ended... However some good things did come out of all this chaos; numerous young people who had lost their jobs during wartime found themselves with new opportunities which led to more integration within society overall rather than segregationism or outright discrimination against veterans specifically Many locals may have seen veteran discrimination as simply another sign that things couldn't get better no matter how hard they tried given all that has gone wrong since then but I believe there are two important takeaways from all this: One being veterans can still contribute extremely meaningfully even after years of struggle second being everyone has masks off so don't let anyone tell you otherwise

The name "Wilkes Barre" was given to it by General John Forbes during the American Revolution. The town was first settled in 1795 by German immigrants who named it after their home village of Wilkendorf in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. In 1828, the town's post office was renamed Wilkes-Barre after General John Forbes and his staff while besieging Fort Duquesne on the Susquehanna River. The community became an incorporated borough in 1852 and its first mayor was David Sanger. In 1903 when Bethlehem Steel Corporation built a new steel plant in nearby Scranton Township, parts of Wilkes Barre were annexed into that township as well; but most of the original growth outside of the incorporated borough still occurs today within Borough limits. As early as 1800 there were settlements along what is now Interstate 80 east of present-day Wilkes Barracks including Hebron and Easton which formed part of Lancaster County before being divided between Chester and Delaware counties following revolutionary War boundaries. After independence from Great Britain in 1776 many Loyalists fled to North America where they founded communities such as Pittsburg (1781), Yorktown (1782), Cumberland (1783) and Princeton (1785). Many other settlements also sprung up throughout western Pennsylvania during this time including Reading (1784), Lebanon (1802), Scranton (1814), Allentown (1816) and Erie (1821). Many these towns were abandoned due to lack of population or infrastructure or both with few exceptions achieving some level of success until established communities sprang up around them like Bethlehem Steel Company’s Scranton Township which continued to prosper even after becoming part of the anthracite coal mining region surrounding Pittsburgh following World War II."
Wilkes Barre was a town in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Wilkes Barre was Nicholas White in 1784. The town was founded on May 10, 1786 by order of General George Washington as a military post to protect the Western Frontier from British aggression. First known as "Northumberland," and then "Westmoreland," the town name changed several times before it became Wilkes Barre on February 4, 1849. The name may be derived from an English term meaning "a good place for shipping." In 1825, James Kapp bought 640 acres (2 km²) of land southwest of present-day Wilkesboro and built a mill there; this became one of the most important facilities in the community. In 1828, he also built a second mill which still exists today - Kapp's Mill State Historic Site. In 1847, John Prentice opened a general store on First Street in what is now downtown Wilkesboro; this store later became known as Prentice's Store & Restaurant. In 1865-68, William Hines established nearby industrial areas with his iron works and blast furnaces; these industries are now long gone but their impact on local economic development can still be seen today through their preserved remains such as Hines Park andbelieved to be one of the largest steel mills west of Chicago by volume output alone during its heyday in the early 20th century.
