The Army has been present in Wilkes Barre since the late 17th century. The town was originally called "Willekseborough," but changed its name to Wilkes Barre in honor of General George Washington and his army during the American Revolution. The first military unit stationed inWilkes Barre was a militia company, which was organized on October 15, 1775. Active duty within the United States Army began on April 22, 1861 when Confederate soldiers attacked a U.S. military installation at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. The attack cost six U.S. soldiers their lives and thirteen others were wounded; this event is also known as the Battle of Fort Sumter. The First Infantry Regiment of Pennsylvania Infantry (IX) became an active part of the Union Army on July 4, 1862 after it had served under Brigadier General John Atherton during the Civil War campaign against South Carolina forces under Confederate Lieutenant Colonel Robert Ewing at Hatteras Island off North Carolina's coast. The IX regiment lost three officers and sixty-six enlisted men killed or mortally wounded in action during its four years of service with the Union Army; it is thought that this number may be lower because many casualties were either captured or died from disease rather than battle injuries. In 1869 VIII Corps Headquarters moved again to Lynchburg where it remained until 1971 when III Corps Headquarters relocated back to Petersburg once again due to population growth within that city limits necessitating more space for an entire corps headquarters than could be provided at Camp Butler outside Petersburg Limits which would later become known as Crystal City Park across I-95 from downtown Petersburg proper - history would have it that III Corps HQ actually vacated Crystal City Park on November 30th 1971 due to restrictions placed upon them by then Mayor Rick James effective January 1st 1972 limiting how much property they could lease from City government without going through annexation proceedings by County government - however this story may be apocryphal given that changes have been made to I-95 northbound exit 10 prior thereto allowing parking only for local businesses adjacent thereto instead thereof makingCrystalCityPark unavailable for traffic purposes thereby preserving its historical significance
