The town of Whitehall, Pennsylvania is located in the Susquehanna River Valley and was founded by the Dutch in 1681. The town grew quickly after being chartered as a borough on December 12, 1758. The first settler in what is now Whitehall was John Dooley, who arrived in 1760. By 1800, the population of Whitehall had reached 1,500 people and it was formally incorporated as a township on January 24, 1802. Whitehall experienced rapid growth during the 19th century due to its location within commuting distance of Philadelphia and Atlantic City. In 1827, the town became a city when it amalgamated with neighboring Township of Allentown. The city's boundaries were redefined in 1872 when it merged with neighboring Borough of Reading to form the current municipality of Whitehall-Reading. During World War II, Whitehall served as an airfield for several United StatesAAF squadrons including 159th Bomb Group (Medium) which operated from nearby Bentley Field from 1942-1945; 158th Fighter Squadron (Very Heavy) which operated from nearby Mifflin Field from 1943-1944; and 194th Bombardment Wing which flew strategic bombing missions over Japan from 1945-1946. Although whiteewashed buildings are no longer common in downtown Whitehall today due to advances in construction technologies over the years, many businesses still remain open within walking distance of their original locations throughout much of downtown PA - making this one of America's most vibrant small towns!
Whitehall was founded in 1795 by George Washington as a military post on the Susquehanna River. It became the capital of Pennsylvania in 1799 and was renamed Philadelphia in 1801. Whitehall was again renamed Philadelphia in 1866, after the city's annexation by Pennsylvania from Maryland.
