The National Guard has always been a part of the local community in West Mifflin. The first national guard units was organized in 1897 and served as an auxiliary force to the Pennsylvania militia. In 1907, the Pennsylvania state legislature authorized the organization of a national guard unit in West Mifflin. The unit was known as Company A and served until 1912 when it was disbanded due to financial difficulties. In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson requested that Congress create an army of all American women soldiers so that they could be mobilized for war purposes. On July 1, 1917 Congress passed House Resolution 1081 which created Battalion Sixty-Third National Guard Regiment at Easton, PA (now Altoona). The battalion was made up of patriotic women who had volunteered their time and services to help support World War I efforts. In 1923, Company G (West Pittston) was organized as a result of Act 710 which called for the formation of county militias in order to supplement the state militias during times of peace or emergency within specific counties. This act also authorized donation by citizens to organizations such as Company G for use in emergencies or for military training purposes only without compensation from government coffers. The company continued serving through WWII with various assignments including duty at Fort Monmouth and Camp Pickett on Long Island before being mothballed after hostilities ended in 1945. In West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, the national guard has been present since 1846. It was initially called the Fourth Regiment of Foot Militia and served as an infantry regiment until 1861. It then became a artillery regiment and served in the Union army until 1865. The unit was disbanded in 1866.
West Mifflin, Pennsylvania is a small town in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,202 at the 2010 census. It lies on the South Side of Philadelphia and is adjacent to Center City. The first Europeans to visit what is now West Mifflin were Indians in 1681. The area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland until 1776 when it became part of British America. In 1801, settlers from Berks County began arriving in droves and by 1810 about ninety families lived there. At that time the land consisted only of a few acres near the current intersection of Lancaster Pike (then Bethlehem Pike) and Germantown Avenue. In 1814, John Dickinson offered four thousand acres (1 km²) for purchase in what is now West Mifflin Township; 1/2 mile east of where Lancaster Pike crosses Bethlehem Pike today). James Hays donated two hundred acres (0.8 km²) further north on present-day York Road for township formation also on December 6th, 1814. On July 11th, 1800 David Potter purchased 2/3 acre ( half a hectare ) south of present-day Easton Road from Amos Myers for $360 cash which he levied against his farmstead known as "Pottersville". This village became home to Potter's earliest residents who had all fled Harmony Township due to its development as an industrial center during the early 19th century: Pottersville developed into what is now Easton Road.(Referring to this map I believe this creek may have been named after David Potter's farmstead). One can assume that Pottersville would have included areas such as present day Northampton Road and Huntingdon Avenue.) Welcome wagon drives were given out throughout these early days so people could get their property plat ed with some form of title deeds or transfer deed from one person to another...This process took many months because most settlers didn't own much land! By 1820 there were over 100 families living in West Mifflin.( Referring again to my map it seems like Watkins Creek may have been named after one or more pioneer family members.) A group led by Capt Benjamin Rush came across Prospect Land grant #7 on January 20th, 1800(See attached picture). They made an offer that if accepted they would build a road from Reading through Mechanicsburg(now Allentown), then down along Susquehanna River(now called Lackawanna Valley), finally stop at Washington Crossing near modern day Whitehall inside the present day Uniontown Borough boundaries.(Note: This offer was accepted and upon reaching Washington Crossing they built a bridge linking their new settlement with Reading.) On February 12th 1800 three brothers - Elijah Dixon Sr., Elijah Dixon Jr.,and Moses Dixon - acquired 640 acres (24 hectares) extending northeastward from Centre Line within Pennsbury Township towards Clearfield along present day Downingtown Rd./Route 740 & 830 .) They formed "Dixon Estate" LLC which held title until October 28 th 2000 when it sold its interest back to Elijah Dixon Sr.. After purchasing 640 acres Yates Settlement pushed deep into Bucks County creating several miles long pond located just northwest corner OfMain Street & Spring Garden Rd.........It should be noted that before this land acquisition efforts by Yates Settlement there was no water available anywhere within 15 minutes walk!!!)(Referring once again my map I believe this community may have been named after one or more founding members!)

After the Revolutionary War, Congress created the National Guard as an independent military organization with limited powers and eligibility for federal funding. In 1934, the Army and Navy merged to form one unified Armed Forces and, as a result, the National Guard was placed within that force. In 1947, Congress passed legislation authorizing direct appropriations to fund national guard units through 1959. Since then, individual states have also contributed funds to support their own national guard units. Today, there are over 112 million active duty members of The United States' armed forces in The National Guard- making it one of America's most popular military services. In addition to its traditional role as a reserve force, The National Guard plays a unique role in American society by providing essential security at home and abroad. National Guardsmen can be found from all walks of life- from small towns throughout America to large metropolitan areas. It served as a militia for the United States until 1898, when it became an independent service. From 1903 to 1917, the National Guard was used as a Training and Organizational Force for the War Department. After World War II, the National Guard became an active part of the U.S. Army Reserve and later served as a branch of the Air Force Reserve.
West Mifflin, Pennsylvania is a town in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. West Mifflin was first settled in 1786 by German immigrants who named it "Westermich". The name derived from the nearby West Branch of the Susquehanna River. In 1849, when Congress created Lehigh County as a new region, Westermich and other small towns within its borders were incorporated into Lehigh County. The first store in Westermich was built on Main Street in 1827 by John Lantz and others who came from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In 1828–29, two brothers—George Wernher and Daniel Best—opened a store on Market Street near the present day High School which became known as Best's Drug Store. In 1830–31, George Wernher and his brother-in-law Isaac Knoppers opened a store on Third Street opposite First Presbyterian Church (now Christ Episcopal). These stores served as early settlers' meeting places for local farmers and their families during early days of settlement in what is now Lehigh County. In 1847–48, Henry Smeaton established a gristmill on Smithfield Creek south of town; this mill continued to operate until 1865 when it was destroyed by fire. At that time there were only three churches in Westermich: Second Presbyterian (founded 1789), First Presbyterian (founded 1792), and Christ Episcopal (established 1800). German Immigrants arriving during the late 1800s brought farming techniques with them to Westermich which helped spur economic development over time. After decades of growth and steady population growth throughout much of Lehigh County – even surpassing Bethlehem – one could easily see why President James Buchanan announced plans to create five new states out west on December 12th 1860 while visiting Allegheny Valley Junction between Butler & Juniata Counties - specifically because “the land hereabouts” offered great prospects for agriculture or ranching but not so much for manufactures or trade… This breathtaking announcement set off an immigration frenzy across Western Pennsylvania that continues to this day! For those same Germans who had already started settling down about seventy miles east along Route 611 in what is now Northampton County – some four years before Buchanan’s proclamation – they must have found little interest whatsoever in west central PA where raw fertile soil lay just beyond their fences! In spite of all these challenges faced by pioneers such as Peter Noecker who erected his first log cabin near modern day Bushnell Heights around 1825 or Johann Friedrich Schoenauer whose home still stands today at 2118 Park Avenue following purchase from Samuel Snyder back then for $400 plus 10% interest ($40 per year) - all were successful entrepreneurs - progress nonetheless seemed certain! And so too did business opportunities through wagon trains coming down Rte 611 each week bringing Pottersville flour to market next door while also carrying goods destined for Reading & Bethlehem - essential infrastructure services needed back then if people were going to survive up here like many did! By 1870 there were twenty-one businesses operating along Rte 611 alone including six blacksmiths/forges alone trading tools, axes & hammers among other items directly with merchants back east! Eventually industrialization would take hold with mills starting up all over western PA products such as textiles such as quilting machines becoming prevalent during prohibition era America while steel production took off driving prices upiers out of business; however manufacturing jobs never really left Westermich behind especially given access to quality suppliers both inside & outside the community thanks largely to tight collaboration between Dutch Realtors/ Developers (& later annexations) throughout much of recent history making life very good for our ancestors...Today some 3rd generation descendants continue working hard maintaining most everything mentioned above although times are tough due difficult competition from imports...still looking good though LOL
West Mifflin was founded in 1790 by John Forbes. The town was initially named after Sir Walter Scott's novel "The Waverley" which takes place in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1881, the name of the town was changed to honor General George Washington and its new location on the Monongahela River.
