West Mifflin is a town in Adams County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,856 at the 2010 census. West Mifflin is located on the Susquehanna River. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now West Mifflin Township was John Cranch in 1798. The first post office was established in 1800 and the name of the township was changed to Adams Township in 1837. In 1846, West Mifflin Township became a part ofAdams County and remained so until 1923 when it became part of Jefferson County.. In 1818, surveyors from Pennsylvania visited what is now West Mifflin Township and found that there were no Indian groups living there and no suitable land for settlement. They recommended that settlers come overland from Bucks County to survey this region which they did on November 15th of that year with George Washington as their guide. A total of 189 men (60% male) started out from Council Bluffs, Iowa on December 9th for what would become known as "The Great Western Trek." Of these pioneers only 36 made it all the way to Dickinson Landing before returning home due to various obstacles such as lack of food or water supplies along the way including one man who diedometime after reaching Dickinson Landing but before reaching his destination because he could not find any other source for water.. On July 1st, 1800 John Cranch settled permanently in present day West Mifflin Township. By 1830, most residents had moved away because they found good farmland elsewhere within Adams or Jefferson Counties but John Cranch's descendants still live here today as farmers and ranchers.. the township’s initial plat included 5 miles (8 km) east-northeast of present day downtown westminster and 2 miles (3 km) south-southwest of present day East Girardtown.. Westminster grew up around these early businesses: “Dixon”s grocery store operated from about 1858 until 1861; “Sprague”s hat factory opened on Westminster Avenue about 1865; “Moses & Sons saddles” operated from about 1870 until 1893; Appleton furnishings store opened in 1884; finally “Avery & Co., general merchants” opened their store down First Street near Main Street in 1895 which later became Macy’s department store.. It wasn't long before some people decided to move out into this undeveloped area where there were few amenities such as schools or churches so a group of men called themselves "The Pioneers" formed an organization to create these things and named themselves after George Washington who had been instrumental in helping them achieve this goal back east... The group soon grew too large so they rented two adobe buildings on Third Street between Market and Spring streets which served as their headquarters until they bought more property east side at Sixth Street between Second and Third Streets.. They then named their new town "Washington" after him! In 1907 they built a schoolhouse which still stands today across from First Presbyterian Church! This helped solidify Washington's claim to be center stage among those foundingWestminster!... Other early businesses include: Gritters clothing business (1892-1914); Fenton Drug Store (1896-1900), Post Office National Bank (1901-1906), Hennepin Mercantile Company(then Hoffman mercantile company), Greenlawn Cemetery(now Commonwealth Cemetery), City Trading Post(later American Merchant Exchange bank).

West Mifflin is a borough in Blair County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,727 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now West Mifflin were Germans who arrived in 1794 from Swabia and founded a village called "Mühlhausen" on the banks of the Monongahela River. In 1828, they moved to what is now the town of Easton and renamed it West Mifflin after their home town in Bavaria. The name stuck and the borough was established on April 14, 1892 by an act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. West Mifflin has been represented in Congress since 1996 by Republican Tom Marino. In February 2017 he announced his candidacy for re-election to a second term as U.S. Representative from PA's 5th Congressional District which includes all of Blair County as well as parts of Allegheny and Philadelphia counties
West Mifflin was founded in 1798 by Samuel West and his wife Betsy. The town was named for the western part of Pennsylvania which at that time included much of what is now Delaware County, Pennsylvania. In 1827, the name was changed to Westville, in honor of General George Washington.
