Waynesboro is a small town in Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,658 at the 2010 census. It is located in Huntingdon County. Waynesboro is the county seat of Huntingdon County. The community was founded by John Waynes in 1786 as an agricultural settlement on the east side of the Susquehanna River. It became an important transportation and trade center during the early 19th century, thanks to its location at the junction of several wagon trails leading to Pennsylvania and Maryland. In 1814, Waynesboro was incorporated as a borough and retains this status to this day. During World War II, Waynesboro played a critical role in wartime production for America's allies; its mills manufactured munitions for both Japan and Nazi Germany. Waynesboro is a small town located in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2000 census. Waynesboro is the most populous municipality in Huntingdon County and part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The name Waynesboro may be derived from Welsh word "ywys" meaning "way", or creek. It was first settled by English colonists in 1755. In 1812, General James Hays' forces destroyed the Indian village at White Sands Rest on the Shenango River creating a strategic advantage for Union forces during the Battle of Gettysburg. The town was founded on November 2, 1800 by George Washington as a stop on his way toought Yorktown Expedition against Cornwallis near Williamsburg, Virginia. The early years of Waynesboro were difficult due to its location between two hostile Native American tribes: the Shawnees and the Seneca Nation (later known as Allegany). However, with help from Captain John Forbes ofthe British Colonial military unit Fort Cumberland which had been garrisoned at nearby Valley Forge since 1779, Waynesboro began to grow rapidly in trade and commerce during this time period. By 1810, there were about 100 people living in Waynesboro and it boasted a Female Academy and an Exchange House opened in 1815 which facilitated trade with other settlements in western Pennsylvania such as Glens Falls and Greensburg along with New York City's importation point for goods coming downriver from Lake Erie. During much of this time period there was also significant growth withinsmithing industry due to several established families who had developed large workshops around what is now Main Street corner First Street including those of Master tailor Doctor Daniel Potter (1774-1859), Lewis Harper (1790-1860), Joshua Howells (1800-1868) and John Morse Sr.(1787-1850). Manufacturing activity increased significantly when anthracite coal became available starting around 1830 following shipments arriving via canalboats from England that had been forced into port by American Revolutionary War naval blockade efforts targeting British shipping off North America's eastern seaboard. Anthracite mining operations were initially conducted primarily along what is now South Mountain Avenue but later production spread out across Moreland Township including areas northeast of Valley Forge near present day Oakmont where anthracite coal seams are still visible today Despite these difficulties, however, many residents managed to maintain their waywardly successful community through hard work and determination despite competition from more established towns throughout western PA during this time period In 1859 local resident John Morse Sr., owner/operator of one of Pennsylvania's first modern cotton mills started up production here again making Waynesboro one of the largest cotton textile towns west of Philadelphia until that city surpassed it soon after World War II . Grant's visit to the area. In 1933, Waynesboro was incorporated as a borough. In 1951, it became a city and has since grown into an influential community with a strong economy and population.
