Navy Deployed Gift History in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania began in the early 1800s when Commodore Edward Preble of the United States Navy took command of the Philadelphia Naval Yard. He ordered that all supplies necessary to build warships be sent to the yard on a continuous basis. This included cannons, shipbuilding tools, and materials needed for construction. The Commodore also ordered that navy personnel be given presents while they were stationed in Philadelphia. One of these gifts was a gift of a cannon from England. The first navy vessel commissioned by the United States was USS Constitution on December 14th, 1775. Commodore Preble also giftedUSS Constitution with three guns from HMS Cornwallis after she had been captured by American forces at Battle of Bunker Hill on April 19th, 1776. USS Constitution would continue serving as America’s Flagship until she was decommissioned in 1801 and converted into an ammunition depot at Norfolk, Virginia in 1802-1803 before finally being sold for scrap in 1806. USS Constitution is one of only eight warships ever to have served twice as America’s flagship (the others are USS George Washington (1797), USS Rodney (1948), USS Enterprise (CVN 65), CSS Virginia (1864), CSS Florida (1865), and SS James Ligonier Jr.(1927)). Waynesboro is a town in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. Waynesboro is one of six townships in Armstrong County. It is bordered by the borough of Armstrong to the north and east, Greenville to the south and west, Allentown to the northwest and Reading to the southeast. The first people who lived in Waynesboro were Dutch settlers from New Netherland who founded a trading post on present-day Wilson Road in 1682. The area that now includes Waynesboro was first settled by English colonists in 1727 as part of a land grant given by King George II to Sir John Moore (1672–1736). In 1795, following peace negotiations between Great Britain and France, Lord Cornwallis granted all of Armstrong County including Waynesboro to Pennsylvania. In 1801, what is now Armstrong Township was organized from parts of Greenville Township and Allentown Township. On February 15, 1824, when Pennsylvania became a republic under Andrew Johnson's Ulysses S. Grant administration (1821–1865), it struck down sections of the British North Atlantic System that had been included within Armstrong County since its creation as part of Crown Colony in 1682. This led to increased settlement withinArmstrong County during this time period; as a result, many old structures built during colonial times still stand today such as Old Mill Tavern on State Road 11 near present day Waynesboro Middle School. In 1825–26 large areas around Armstrong and Greenville Townships were burned by parties loyal to Aaron Burr while he was campaigning for president against James Kippenhaver on behalf of Burr's political rival Samuel Adams (1755–1837). As a result of this event numerous homes were destroyed or damaged along with several thousand acres (80 km²) of forested land which eventually became known as "the Burrs' Woods". After Reconstruction following the American Civil War ended in 1865, many free black citizens relocated from former slave states into newly freed American territories such as Texas and West Virginia due to advances made through new legislation allowing African Americans access both education and labor opportunities denied them under Confederate rule. One group specifically interested in moving into what is now Armstrong Township was these freedmen's organization known as the National Union Party composed mainly of white men seeking an opportunity for self-government within newly acquired America not beholden to Great Britain or any other European power at that time.– henceforth referred also informally simply as "the National Republicans." Upon learning about this possibility Wm Hite donated land east side OF Main Street/way between Highways 9 & 10 forming what would become "Hite Park" . This donation opened up much opportunity for business development within township center dating back prior thereto including modern day Wayside Marketplace located adjacent thereto../on October 25th 1830 Jonathan Wayne purchased lot 5 East Side Of Main Street From Wm Hite For $500’
Waynesboro was first settled in 1776 by the Shawnee and other Native Americans. The town was named for General John Wayne, who fought against the British in the American Revolution. In 1811, Waynesboro was incorporated as a borough. In 1847, it became a city.
