Waynesboro is located in the Susquehanna Valley near the confluence of the Susquehanna and Monongahela Rivers. The name "Waynesboro" comes from Captain David Waynes' original land grant of . The first post office at Waynesboro was established in 1754 and closed in 1869. The present post office building was built in 1906 and named for Colonel George Hays, who served as mayor from 1924 to 1928. In 1988, the township adopted a charter that allowed for a high school (now known as Lewis University High School) and a library system within its borders. In 2002, waynesboro annexed nearby Dormont Township to form a new municipality with a population of 4,695 people but no shopping center or other major businesses within its boundaries; this annexation remained effective until 2009 when Dormont again separated from waynesboro to form their own municipality with 5,512 residents

Today, Waynesboro is aghost town with no one living there remaining. The community was founded in 1795 by Revolutionary War veterans who fled British occupation of Philadelphia. But it wasn't until 1812 that Waynesboro began to experience sustained growth. That year, the United States Congress passed the first national census in America and found that Waynesboro had increased from 1,500 people to 3,000-plus citizens. The town's importance grew even further when the Erie Canal was completed through central Pennsylvania in 1825 and brought new industries and jobs to the area. The late 1800s were also a time of significant reform for Waynesboro. In 1892, Mayor Johnmie Weiser made strides to improve public health by creating a city water system and building schools and churches within the community. He also spearheaded an effort to rename the Community School District No. 2 after his father—the first superintendent of education in Waynesboro—in order to keep it open despite budget cuts during the Great Depression era. After World War II ended, many Waynesboroughers returned home; however, some chose not to return because they felt their community had been taken away from them during wartime times (although most people here today are descendants of those original settlers). To date only two people have moved back into #waynesborogheest: an 86-year-old woman who recently purchased her home from her grandparents; as well as Jeff Kessler Jr., an 83-year old retiree who has lived here since 1978
