In 1865, the town was burned down by Confederate forces during the Battle of Gettysburg. The fire destroyed much of the downtown area and killed many people. After the battle, Waynesboro regained its identity as a small farming community with few commercial enterprises. In 1969, Waynesboro became an independent city after being annexed by Philadelphia. It has since experienced significant growth and development within its borders - becoming one of Philadelphia's most vibrant neighborhoods.
