Waynesboro is a small town in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Waynesboro is part of the Allentown-Doylestown-Easton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by Whitehall Township to the east, South Littleton Township to the south, and Bethlehem Township to the west. Waynesboro was founded in 1780 by Captain John Wayne and his wife Anne Wayne as a trading post on an artificial island in what is now known as West Branch Creek. In 1800, Sir George Washington stopped at Waynesboro for supplies during his tour of Pennsylvania. In 1812—the year after General Robert Ewing's invasion of Kentucky—Captain John Wayne donated land to build a school in honor of his son John Wayne (1775–1848), who had accompanied General Ewing into that state on horseback. The first public school opened in 1813 under charter from Mayor Edward Everett Hale (1792–1868). In 1824 Joseph Pemberton donated land for a new courthouse and square which stand today on Main Street between Second and Third Streets. Waynesboro was founded in 1795 by George Washington, who named it for his father-in-law, General James Wayne. The town grew rapidly during the 1800s, and by 1820 it had a population of 4,000. In 1827 Waynesboro became the capital of Pennsylvania and was home to the state's first government. The city experienced a boom period in the 1840s and 1850s as settlers arrived from Maryland, Virginia, and Ohio. By 1860 Waynesboro had a population of 25,000 and was one of the most populous towns in Pennsylvania. However, because of its location on the Susquehanna River floodplain, Waynesboro lost much of its commercial stability during the late 19th century. In 1892–93 the town suffered an important fire that killed many inhabitants and destroyed many businesses. In 1945 Waynesboro became an independent municipality once again after being annexed by Philadelphia. It has seen significant growth since then, with enrollment increasing from 2,500 in 2000 to over 10,000 today.
