Washington, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,783 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Washington were George Washington and his son-in-law James Kephart who arrived in 1784. They founded the town on land gifted to them by Colonel John Forbes. Washington died in1799 and Kephart continued to live there until 1802 when he sold the town to Philadelphia entrepreneur Daniel Henshaw. Henshaw renamed it "Washington" after his home state of Virginia and built two churches there: one for Anglicans and one for Presbyterians which still stand today. After the war, many men from Lancaster County came to work on army posts around Philadelphia while others returned home to start new homesteads around Washington. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through Washington on their way down the Ohio River and stopped at the town for dinner before continuing their journey southward. At this time Washington had a population of about 100 people but by 1840 it hadgrownto nearly 300 thanks to contributions from soldiers and civilians alike including Quakers, Baptists (founded a church here), Congregationalists (formed a congregation), Methodists (founded an academy), Presbyterians (founded a school) as well as immigrants from Hungary, Poland, Lithuania and other parts of Europe who began arriving here following Jackson's victory over Mexico at Monterrey in1848.
