Washington, Pennsylvania is a small town in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Washington is named for George Washington, who was born in 1732 in Fredericksburg, Virginia and died in 1799 in Mount Vernon, Virginia. In 1814, when President James K. Polk announced that Mexico would be ceded to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Washington was one of only two American towns to oppose this move - along with West Point (New York). The other American town to opposed Polk's decision was Buffalo (New York). In 1821 Washington became an independent city after it seceded from Bucks County; it annexation by Philadelphia followed in 1827. The first post office at Washington opened on November 1st, 1800; it served as the Albany post office until January 6th of 1825 when it moved to its current location at Fourth and Market Streets. The first store on Third Street near Main Street opened on December 21st 1830 by John Swayne and his wife Sarah Ann Lovells Waddell alias Lovells Waddell & Co.; John Swayne had come overland from Ireland with his family several months earlier. Store fronts were painted red and black which matched the colors of then-new U.S.-issued currency known as “redbacks” or simply “dollars” due to their high value back then - about $0.50 each today against local currencies like dollars or euros . On October 2nd 1830 Congress passed an act authorizing General Andrew Jackson to lay out streets within what would become Philadelphia . On November 3rd 1830 crews started working on coming up with names for these new streets including Broadway – after General Jackson’s Creek Road which ran through Abington Township just north of where Third Street now stands – Lafayette Avenue after Major General Lafayette who had been aide de camp to Jackson during his campaigns throughout North America – Court House Square after Judge James Fenton’s original courthouse located Just east of Broadwalk on Second Street – and finally King Street which would eventually become Independence Hall Place between Spring Garden Place and Eastern Parkway/Second Avenue such that all future street namesakes could be found within a short distance of one another! This Act also authorized construction of what is now Penn's Landing behind Independence Hall which later became home to many businesses including Mayflower Brewery (now called Anchor Brewing) before becoming home to University City Center mall following quarrying efforts around that time! Washington prospered during this time thanks largely to its close proximity toPhiladelphia while continue being an unincorporated community managed by its residents until 1840 when Common Council granted incorporation status making it a full-time municipality under state law! After years spent deliberating over whether or not they should become a city or remain unincorporated ,the citizens voted by referendum on March 8th 1850 for incorporation into the newly created Kingdom Of Philadelphia Incorporation ! During this time period many famous people lived and worked here such as Abraham Lincoln - who rented property next door from Samuel Morse while he attended college; Levi Strauss & Co., creatorof Levi Strauss jeans who built their first factory here; Edwin Droste whose art galleries dotting much of central Philly were some early adopters of photography; baseball great Babe Ruth played ball at Warminster High School across the street from where today'sdroste gallery sits; congressman Charles Sumner took office here during Reconstruction days before moving westwardly into politics permanently
