Washington is a city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 185 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Susquehanna River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Pittsburgh and 25 miles (40 km) north of Philadelphia. Washington was founded by George Washington and named for his birthplace, Mount Vernon. The first white person to live in what is now Washington was Robert Morris in 1784. In 1814, General James K. Polk made it the capital of the United States after Congress moved from New York City following the War of 1812. After years as a small town, Washington became an urban center during the late 19th century with growth in education, industry and commerce. In 1907, part of downtown became federally protected as National Historic Landmark District No. 527-A under designation by President Theodore Roosevelt; this included much of today's Penn Quarter including much of the Federal Building which still stands today (built between 1800 and 1825). Today's business district contains several large public buildings as well as many smaller businesses within walking distance or easy access by car or bus ride to most parts of town

Two years later, Kinglake gave a set of two luxury brass urns filled with sea creatures including urchins, dolphins and porpoises as a gift for Commodore John F Kennedy during his visit to Britain. From then on, Marine Gifts quickly became the rage in both countries. In 1787, Washington and his compatriots founded the new nation of the United States of America in what is now Pennsylvania. It was a time of great mobilization for the new nation, as many people from across the country gathered to pledge their allegiance to the cause. The land that would become Pennsylvania had been surveyed by George Washington and others during his military campaigns in New York and Virginia. The area lay east of Philadelphia, on either side of the Susquehanna River. The first permanent settler in what would become Pennsylvania was John Nicholson, who arrived in 1792. He located a small township on land that he purchased from the proprietor of Newtown Township near present-day Allentown. Nicholson's family operated a farm there until 1827 when they sold it to James McGowan, who also bought two other parcels nearby. McGowan started a mill at Monongalia Creek which became one of the largest mills in PA during this time period. In 1828 he built an additional mill on Monongalia Creek which continued operation until 1840 when it burned down due to fire damage caused by Indians. The millrace still exists and is used today for boat traffic
