Washington is a town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading section of Philadelphia. Washington was chartered on March 15, 1791 by General George Washington and his brother James as a trading post on the Susquehanna River between Lancaster and Carlisle. By 1802 it had become an important center for trade with the British colonies in North America. In 1814, Washington became the capital of United States after its purchase from Congress of George Washington's personal domain by President James K. Polk. The first Americans to settle in what is now Washington were among those who accompanied General John Forbes during his expedition against the Shawnee Indians in 1799. They built for themselves a small log cabin called Fort Forbes on what is now Point Breeze Avenue near today's intersection of York Road and Spring Garden Road. In 1800 David Wilson erected a sawmill on Beaver Creek whichrewas central to local commerce until it burned down in 1825. The first settler in what is now Washington was Isaac Parker who arrived there around 1800 with his family from Lewisburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania under contract from William Penn to establish a settlement along Beaver Creek near present-day Clearfield Township (now Lebanon). He named his new community Parkersburg in honor of William Penn's son-in-law and namesake - Sir GeorgeParker (1685–1737). On October 24, 1792 Joseph Horseshoe erected a white picket fence around what are now known as Horseshoe Hill and Springfield Streets northeast of present day Market Square where he lived with about twenty families when he died suddenly after years of effort at farming and ranching operations which included over one hundred head of livestock including thirty horses and six mules; more than three thousand acres were planted with maize crops; significant water access was provided by Deer Creek running through their lands; lumber production began with felling trees 10 feet high or less at Cherry Run Mill located just east ofpresent day Market Square; Prior to this time any kindof transportation other than walking could only be accomplished by horseback or wagon drawn carts
