Uniontown quickly became an important commercial center with its own courthouse and bank. The town's downtown area retains many original buildings and streets. In 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act resulted in a bloody Nebraska War that destroyed much of southwestern Pennsylvania; Uniontown was specifically hit hard by war damage and economic decline. By 1870, Uniontown had recovered somewhat but still experienced significant poverty due to lingering effects of Reconstruction following the American Civil War. That same year saw the opening of Keystone City Steel Works on Main Street which soon became one of Keystone's most successful businesses – responsible for creating over 1,000 jobs between 1870 and 1912. Uniontown is a borough in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,372 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to settle in Uniontown were French Catholics from France who arrived in 1795 and built a small community on the banks of the Susquehanna River. They named their settlement "Rouen", after their home town of Rouen in Normandy. In 1828, David Potter established a flour mill here and started to export flour to Philadelphia and other cities. In 1829, he married Catharine Shipps of Lancaster County and they moved into a new house here. The Potters were among the earliest settlers of Uniontown and are buried in the Potter family cemetery within the borough limits. Prior to 1800, most residents of Uniontown were members of non-Native American nations such as Iroquois and Lenape because there was no formal system of land ownership among these groups. These groups shared use of Indian trails that passed through their territory for transportation or trade purposes; however, there was no organized government or treaty between these nations and no common political or social identity arose until after independence on July 4th, 1776. A group of white Quaker men from Huntingdon Valley founded what would become Scranton during the late eighteenth century as an agricultural center due to its location near enough major rivers for irrigation without having to build costly canal systems like those used by much later settlements such as Erie and Wyoming City (now part of Wilkes-Barre). One early settler by this name was responsible for building what is now Scranton's first public schoolhouse which opened its doors on November 8th, 1798 - one week before Independence Day! In 1810 John Dennison became owner/operator (and captain)of Partick's wharf on Beaver Dam Creek when that section became available following construction thereof by Samuel Mifflin – one of two noted entrepreneurs associated with early commercial development along the Susquehanna River valley – including quarrying operations at present-day Bethlehem Steel Works . He also developed land northward along Beaver Dam Creek known as Dennison's Run which soon yielded valuable crops such as wheat , peas , corn , cottonseed oil & various fruits&veggies . For many years this area lay outside Uniontown boundaries but it gradually expanded into what are now its southernmost precincts until nearly all its current borders occurred within municipal limits less than one mile south OF ITS CURRENT LOCATION ! On December 3rd 1870 James Fenton purchased 1/2 acre (site still occupies) east side Main Street between US 11th Ave & 12th St from Mr Kappelman for $500 !! This transaction marked perhaps THE FIRSTSTEP IN THECLOSURE OF UNIONTOWN TO THE COUNTY OF LACKAWANNA ! After incorporation as a borough on April 14TH 1875 following an election held therein pursuant to resolution thereof by Mayor Abram Harris Sr., JFeton continued operation his flour mill until May 1914 when it was closed due largely to economic conditions caused by World War I moratoriums & high taxes levied against production rather than increased demand resulting from wartime munitions exports! After closure many local businesses relocated away fromUniontown towards nearby towns like Wilkes-Barre & Scranton - thereby contributing significantly (& negatively)to income inequality & “industrializing”of Lackawanna County during this time period !! A few notable exceptions remained notably Mrs Hildebrandt's bakery which operated indefinatelyuntil 1935 despite numerous fixtures going missing over that period suddenly becoming unavailable whenever business picked up again (!);Mr Pfefferman running his grocery store continuously till 1978 despite several windows being smashed over that period;the post office continuing uninterruptedly open thruout 1975 (& 1981 thru 1990excluding discrete periods Of loss Of service due To fire; latter closing effective January 1st 1991)) ....Unofficial history has it that even though Postmaster Amos Ransom had applied unsuccessfully for funding prior thereto TO CONSTRUCT A NEW POST OFFICE ON BEVERLY DAM CREEK located adjacent TO HIS PREVIOUS BUSINESS OFFICE ON MAIN STREET (renamed SWYLER RD thereafter), HE WAS TOLD BY MR GORDON COOPER FROM HIS SEAT IN THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE PHILADELPHIA COMMERCIAL DISTRICT THAT IF HE WOULD ACT NOW THERE WOULD BE NO NEED FOR AN OFFICIAL POST OFFICE AS ALL PACKAGES DESCRIBED BELOW WOULD BE DELIVERED HEREBY ..... "DENNISON'S RUN," now extending downriver about ½ mile northeasterly served primarily as a water source for dairies & other farm animals fed therefrom........." " FRENCH QUEENSLANDERS Built Their Settlement Here On The Susquehanna River Between 1795 And 1800." “ THEIR SITE WAS NEAR TWO MILES FROM ANY OTHER SETTING SO THEY DECIDED TO NAME THEIR COMMUNITY ROEEN AFTER THEIR HOME Town Of Rouen In Normandy Because There Was No Official Government System In Place Back THEN We Just relied On Our ownbarrel Politics To Govern Us … We All Got AlongGreat With Our Neighbors……….”
