Uniontown is a small town in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, located in Cumberland County. It was founded in 1792 by British colonists as Uniontown, and became a borough in 1854. The population was 9,451 at the 2010 census. Unions are a type of labor union and are part of the American labor movement. The first European settlers to what is now Uniontown were Englishmen who arrived on horseback from Maryland in 1792. The town was named for General John Forbes, who had led an expedition against the Shawnee Indians two years earlier. At first, Uniontown consisted only of Indian reservations managed by the Pennsylvania Native Sons of America (PNSA). However, in 1814 Congress granted township status to all unincorporated areas west of Allegheny River and north of Huntingdon Creek except for those within 15 miles (24 kilometers) of Philadelphia or its western suburbs. This enlarged Uniontown to its present size when it annexed parts of nearby Allentown and Bethlehem Township on December 5, 1854. Uniontown's history is closely intertwined with that of its constituent unions: the local paperworkers' union began operations on October 1, 1870; miners' unions followed soon afterward; and agricultural workers formed their own unions during World War I and World War II. Uniontown is a census-designated place (CDP) in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The CDP was formed from the merger of two smaller communities: Uniontown Township and East Union Township. The two townships were created on July 1, 1951 as a result of the US Supreme Court's decision in Tinker v Des Moines Independent Community School District (423 U.S. 563). In 2000, Uniontown had an overall population of 2,619 according to the US Census Bureau estimate; this decreased to 2,482 at the 2010 census due to its incorporation into Philadelphia metropolitan area. Uniontown started as a small community with about sixty citizens in 1821 when settlers took up land east of Market Street in what is now Clearfield County. The town grew rapidly during late-18th century American Revolution days as many people joined forces against British rule and helped build Independence Hall and other key landmarks including First Presbyterian Church and School which are still standing today. After independence was gained in 1776 many men left for new colonies such as Connecticut or New York but some returned home to help build their old homes and businesses which thrived until around 1800 when Congress passed the Alien Property Act which revoked most social welfare benefits for any non-citizen owned property within twelve miles of Washington D.C.. This led to large numbers of Irish Catholics moving into township between 1804 and 1825 causing much conflict between them and local Protestants over religious services being offered at schoolhouses along Main Street (). In 1850 more than doubling in size from 60 residents to 240 residents caused a movement by some "old timers" who wanted their own post office (now known as South Kensington), grocery store (now known as Westphalia), blacksmith shop (now known as Mount Airy forge), physician's office (later replaced by Cook University Hospital) and Masonic lodge (. Today there are no visible reminders that once sleepy Uniontown had an active community). Thereafter came decades during which only intermittent growth occurred until economic restructuring brought about increased labor competition across northeast Pennsylvania during World War II due largely to increases in manufacturing jobs outside Pittsburgh while eastern coal mines closed throughout America leading directly to shrinking populations within counties surrounding anthracite coal fields making it difficult for families living thereto remain tax paying citizens even if they did not move out of county (). In 1815, Uniontown had a population of 185 people and was known as "the most flourishing village east of the Alleghenies".
