State College, Pennsylvania (commonly known as State College) is a city in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and the county seat of Butler County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 24,769. The name "State College" was first given to the town by George Washington in 1786 when he visited for two weeks while on his way from Bethlehem to Lancaster. At that time, he named it after King George II of Great Britain because he felt that American colleges were being built too close together and not providing a good education for all citizens. The University of Pennsylvania moved to State College in 1847 from Philadelphia, but only lasted until 1903 before moving again due to lack of space. In 1881, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania took over management and operation of Penn State from Dickinson School District #2 and various other school districts throughout the Commonwealth until 1988 when it became an independent public university under section 1201(a) of the Public Education LawofPennsylvania). In 2003, Penn State relocated its main campus across town from its original location near Hershey Park to what is now called Beaver Stadium on University Avenue in downtown State College proper. State College, Pennsylvania is a college town in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and seat of Allegheny County. The city was founded by James Wilson in 1792 as a small trading post on the Monongahela River. In 1815, State College became a college when it merged with the University of Pittsburgh, then known as Western University. The university continued to be headquartered at State College until 1974, when it moved to its current site in Oakland. Since 1970, State College has been governed by the State Colleges Board of Trustees. The earliest mention of what is now State College appeared in 1688 when John Simpson located some land there and named it "Willisburgh". At that time, Willoughby County was part of Westmoreland County and the eastern border of Pennsylvania. In 1792, James Wilson established a trading post here and named it "StateCollege". The first students arrived at State College in October 1793 under instruction from Professor Samuel Johnson. At that time, only men could attend the school; women did not enroll until 1907. In 1815, Western University moved from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia after losing its charter due to financial problems. However, because Pittsburgh still had vestige of its academic strength and political influence%, many students transferred to Western University including such luminaries as James Bryce and Millard Fillmore. This prompted state legislators to pass the Act for Establishing Universities (1816), which created four universities - Carnegie Mellon (1868), Johns Hopkins (1875), Pennsylvania Wesleyan (1902) and Stroudsburg (1924). In 1870-71 State Colleege served 1st District Court Judge Gouverneur Morris who also donated land for campus development on Park Avenue between Second Street & Third Street west of Market Square near today's Center for Fine Arts sculpture garden – one block north of where Penn'sucks Hall stands today!
